PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Former Providence College student-athletes Brian Burke `77 and Ron Wilson `77 led the United States men's hockey team to the silver medal in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics on Sunday, February 28. Team U.S.A. was defeated by Canada, 3-2, in overtime in the Gold Medal Game. Burke served as the team's general manager, while Wilson was the head coach.
Team U.S.A. finished the tournament with a 5-0-1-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record and earned a silver medal for the first time since the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. On its way to the title game, Team U.S.A posted impressive victories, including its first win against Canada in the Olympics since 1960.
Wilson, who is PC's all-time leading scorer with 250 career points, has over 550 career wins as an NHL coach. He currently serves as the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Prior to Toronto, Wilson coached the San Jose Sharks, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the Washington Capitals. He also led the 1996 U.S. National Team to a gold medal in the World Cup. In 1998, he served as the head coach for Team U.S.A at the Nagano Olympics and also coached the 2004 United States National World Cup team. The two-time First Team All-American is a member of the PC Athletic Hall of Fame and is the NCAA's all-time leading scoring defenseman.
Burke is currently the president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Burke, who played in 112 games at PC, became the second former Friar (while serving as a general manager) to help an NHL team capture the Stanley Cup title as the Anaheim Ducks won the crown in 2007. Prior to Anaheim, Burke also served as the President and General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks.
