PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College volleyball Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson announced the signing of two student-athletes to national letters of intent on Tuesday, November 16. Anna Russian and Mackenzie Ziegler become the latest members of the class of 2015, joining Kelly Ashmore and Geralyn Gaines, who signed last week.

Russian played her prep volleyball at Round Rock High School in Round Rock, Texas. She earned two varsity letters in volleyball at Round Rock, while adding three in basketball and two in track and field. She also was a four-year member of the Austin Performance club team. An academic all-state honoree as a senior, she also earned second team all-district honors as a junior. As a sophomore, she received all-district honors in basketball and was a state qualifier in discus. The Round Rock, Texas, native is the daughter of Sylvia Acosta and Tom Russian. Her brother, Alex, is a senior on the football team at LSU.

"Annie is the person and player we need to add depth to our strong middle blocking core. She will be the future of our middle blocker position and we are so happy she will be a part of our team," Royer-Johnson said.

Ziegler played at Portage High School in Portage, Wis. She earned four varsity letters in volleyball, as well as one in basketball. She was a unanimous first team all-Badger North Conference selection as a senior (the third time she received all-conference honors), and also earned all-state honors. She was named the all-Area Player of the Year in Portage and also received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Wisconsin Player of the Week award for the week of October 4, 2010. Ziegler averaged 9.25 kills per match during the week's four matches. It was her second AVCA Wisconsin Player of the Week Award, as she also earned that honor as a junior. She had a career-high 41 kills in a five-set match as a junior, while adding a 37-kill performance in a four-set match as a senior. She also received ACVA all-academic honors as a junior. Zeigler was also a three-year member of the Capital Volleyball Academy Elite 18 team. The Portage, Wis., native is the daughter of Nancy and Kevin Ziegler and has one sister, Alissa. Her father Kevin, played basketball at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

"Mackenzie is going to make a big impact for us as a hitter as she has a strong swing and the height to put up a big block. Her biggest strength, however, is her drive. She is a hard worker and wants to win. We are so happy she is a Friar," Royer-Johnson said.

The signings of Russian and Ziegler brings the total number of incoming freshman for the 2011 season to four for the Friars. They lose just three players to graduation and will return the team's leaders in kills, digs and assists as they enter the 2011 campaign, their second as a member of the America East conference.
