Providence Volleyball Signs Two Student-Athletes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College volleyball Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson announced the signing of two student-athletes to national letters of intent on Thursday, November 11. Kelly Ashmore and Geralyn Gaines will both join the Friars in the fall of 2011.
Ashmore played in high school at the Whitfield School, as well as for the Kirkwood Synergy club team. She earned four letters at Whitfield, She was ranked 11th on the STL Prep Sports list, which covers athletes in the greater St. Louis area. She averaged 2.24 kills per set as a senior, while hitting .333 and also picking up 4.45 digs per set. She helped Whitmore to district titles as a sophomore and junior, while helping them to a ranking of third among small schools in Missouri by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Ashmore also played basketball and softball at Whitfield, leading all three sports to a district title as a sophomore, the first time that has happened in school history. She also makes history by becoming the first Whitfield volleyball player to go on to play NCAA Division I Volleyball. The Kirkwood Synergy twice played in the American National Junior Olympic Tournament, most recently placing 13th. Ashmore is a native of Town & Country, Mo., and the daughter of Sandy and Craig Ashmore. Her mother, Sandy, played both basketball and softball at the University of Connecticut.
"We are really excited about Kelly being with us in the fall. She can hit from every position and has the ability to be in our serve receive patterns as well. I can't wait to coach her," said Royer-Johnson.
Gaines played her prep volleyball at Detroit Country Day, earning four varstiy letters in volleyball. Gaines was among her team's leaders as a senior, averaging 3.12 kills per set to go along with 4.10 digs per set. A three-time academic all-state honoree in Michigan, Gaines did not miss a set in her last three years at Detroit Country Day. Twice during her career, she rattled off more than 20-consecutive serves, picking up 24-straight in a 25-1 set as a sohpmore before notching 21-straight in a 25-3 win as a senior. A native of Rochester Hills, Mich., Gaines is the daughter of Jacqueline Munson-Gaines and Bruce Gaines. Like Ashmore, she comes from a rich athletics background, as her mother played basketball at Western Michigan, her grandfather played basketball at the University of Detroit and three uncles played football at Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green and Concordia, while another played basketball at Central Michigan.
"Geralyn is a player with a lot of potential as she has quick reflexes and a consistent serve. She wants to win and will bring her winning attitude to our team!" said Royer-Johnson.
The Friars have one match remaining in their 2010 schedule, as they play at UMBC this Sunday, November 14, at 11:00 a.m.
