ALBANY, N.Y. - The Providence College volleyball team (9-13, 1-2 America East) dropped a three-set match to Albany (12-5, 2-0 America East) on the road Friday night. The Great Danes took the three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-10.
Provdience was led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who registered 10 kills and a pair of blocks. Classmate Shelagh Doaln (Westford, Mass.) and senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) each added five kills. Morris and sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the back row with 12 digs apiece.
Albany was led by Teresa Coppiellie and Dunja Prgomet, who both recorded double-doubles. Each notched 15 kills, while Prgomet led the defense with 15 digs and Coppiellie picked up 13 digs. Traci Vandergrift added 14 kills for the Great Danes, while Laurie Gonzalez recorded 12 digs. Setter Abbey Wexel recorded 31 assists.
The first set saw both teams play well, however the Friars' hitting percentage of .216 was eclipsed by the Great Danes' impressive .417 percentage. Providence hung tough early, with the set featuring seven ties and four lead changes, but Albany was able to take the 1-0 lead with a 25-20 win.
The second set saw both teams' attacks struggle, as Providence hit .095 and Albany dropped off to a .250 hitting percentage. It was a set of runs, with the Friars jumping out to a 10-2 lead before the Great Danes fought back to take an 18-14 lead. Providence would get back within one point, at 20-19 on a Fletcher kill, but that would be the closest they would get, as Albany took the set, 25-21.
The third set belonged to Albany, as the Great Danes hit at a blistering .522 clip, while Providnce was unable to overcome eight errors. Albany took the final set, 25-10, and the match, 3-0.
The Friars remain on the road for their next match, an Amerca East showdown with Binghamton in Vestal, N.Y., on Sunday, October 10. The match is set for 2:00 p.m.
