PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team picked up a big sweep in conference play over the University of New Hampshire (26-24, 25-21, 25-31) Friday night at Mullaney Gymnasium. The Friars improve to 10-17 on the season, 2-4 in America East play. The Wildcats fall to 7-14, 2-4 in league action.

Before the match, Providence Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson challenged her team and explained they had three options for the remainder of the season. Option A was to begin to let things pass on the campaign, option B was to keep things the way they were and option C was to give more than each player thought they could and keep their America East tournament hopes alive. The squad responded and "Choose Option C!" became the theme for the match.

Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Shelagh Dolan led the way with six kills apiece. Perhaps the most impressive part of the box score is that three other players joined them with three kills each, as juniors Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) and senior co-captain Kourtney Halliday (Bourne, Mass.) all contributed for the Friars in their most balanced match of the year. Stargint the attack, Morrison picked up 19 assists on the match.

The Friar defense was led by sophomore libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.), who picked up 19 digs. Senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) also played well in the back row, picking up nine digs, while Morrison added seven. Again showing the balance Providence showed tonight, Fletcher picked up a season-high in digs for a three set match with five.

New Hampshire was led by Justine Elliot, who picked up 12 kills, while Destiny Tolliver added seven. Setter Sara Heldman picked up 27 sets. The Wildcat back row saw strong play from Heldman and Jayde Huxtable, who picked up 15 and 17 digs, respectively.

The story of the match was Providence's ability to take advantage of New Hampshire errors, as the Wildcat attack just could not get going. Providence won the first set, with only seven kills, thanks in part to 13 New Hampshire errors. The star of the set was Muzzonigro, who picked up nine digs, while the other two members of the trio of M's, Morris and Morrison added three digs apiece, keeping several rallies alive for the Friars. Providence led 18-12, but a furious UNH rally was led by Jessie Schenpp, whose service game kept the Friars off balance most the evening and got her squad within one point, 21-20. The set stayed tight until Muzzonigro came to the service line with the score tied at 24-24. The libero served up an ace and that was followed by a Wildcat error giving Providence the set, 26-24.

The second set was a similar story, with just a little less drama near the end. Providence played its most balanced set of the season, as seven different players recorded a kill and Morrison was the only player with two kills. The back row again kept the Friars alive, with Morris and Muzzonigro each picking up four digs in the frame. The Friars trailed 14-9 before the service game of Hendel helped Providence rattle off five-straight and tie it at 14-14. The set turned in favor of the Friars for good when Morrison notched consecutive service aces to take the lead from 21-19 to 23-19. A Fletcher service ace ended the set, 25-21, giving Providence a 2-0 lead heading to the intermission.

After the break, the balanced Friar attack again proved to be deadly. Fletcher, Hendel, Dolan and Halliday all notched a pair of kills in the set, while Muzzonigro did her part with six digs. The biggest lead of the set belonged to the Wildcats, who led by four points at several times, the last at 21-17. With UNH leading 22-19, they made four-consecutive errors to give Providence a 23-22 lead and the Friars took full advantage. A kill from Halliday gave the Friars a 24-23 lead before Dolan and freshman Emily Hall (Canal Winchester, Ohio) blocked an attack from Lauren Laquerre to give the Friars the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.

The Friars and Wildcats meet again after a day off, as this match marked the end of the first half of the America East season. The rematch will come this Sunday, October 24, in Durham, N.H., with the first serve at 1:00 p.m.
