PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped its first-ever match in America East play, falling to Stony Brook in straight-sets (17-25, 24-26, 19-25). The Friars drop to 7-12, 0-1 in league play, while the Seawolves improve to 6-11, 1-0 in the conference.
The Friars were led by juniors Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.). Fletcher notched a team-high eight kills, while Hendel added seven. Sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the defense with 12 digs, while senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) added nine. Junior setter Carly Morrison picked up 19 assists.
The Stony Brook attack put two hitters in double-digit kills, as Alicia Nelson notched 12 kills while Ashley Headen added 10. Nelson and libero Jeanette Gibbs led the defense with nine digs apiece. The tandem of setters for the Seawolves had a solid night. Kelsey Sullivan picked up 17 assists and Corinne Perry notched 16.
The Friars struggled out of the gate in the first set, notching only six kills while committing six errors. The Seawolves led the whole way, keyed by five kills from Nelson, and took the set, 25-17.
The second set proved to be the most dramatic of the night, featuring eight ties and four lead changes. Hendel kept the Friars in it, notching five kills, while Fletcher added five. In the end, it wasn't enough to overcome Headen's six kills and Nelson's five, as Stony Brook took the set, 26-24.
The third set saw the Seawolves hit at a blistering .346 clip. Nelson again led the way with four kills and Providence hit only .040 in the set. Stony Brook took the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.
The Friars face a quick turnaround, returning to the court at Mullaney Gymnasium on Sunday, October 1, when they play hose to Hartford in America East play. The match is set for 1:00 p.m.
