PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (5-3-1, 0-1 BIG EAST): Providence College women's soccer defeated Sacred Heart, 1-0, on Sunday, September 20 on Glay Field in their last non-conference game of 2009. The Friars improve to 5-3-1 overall and Sacred Heart falls to 3-4. Providence improves to 3-0 all-time versus the Pioneers.
The Friars played well throughout the game, possessing the ball and creating quality scoring chances. They held the edge, 13-6, in shots and, 4-3, in shots on goal. In the 47th minute, Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) took a solid strike, but was saved by Meghan Reichelt. In the 82nd minute, Ricciardi would have another quality look and missed the shot just wide of the target.
In the 89th minute, the Friars scored on a ball crossed from Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) that was finished from five yards out by Ricciardi. The goal was Riccardi's first of the season and DelCiampo's first assist, respectively.
The Friars are back in action on Thursday, September 24 when they travel to Syracuse to take on the Orange at 7:00 p.m. to continue BIG EAST Conference play.
