PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College men's basketball coach Keno Davis has signed a new contract that will run through the 2015-16 season. It also was announced that Athletic Director Bob Driscoll has signed a contract extension through the 2015-16 season.

"With Keno's coaching and recruiting skills and Bob's leadership, I believe our athletic department is as strong as ever," Providence College President Rev. Brian Shanley said. "I felt it was necessary to make a long-term commitment to Keno and Bob to ensure the success of the athletic department, including our flagship program -- men's basketball."

On April 15, 2008, Fr. Shanley and Driscoll announced the hiring of Keno Davis, the 2008 National Coach of the Year, to coach the Friars. In his first season at Providence, Davis led the Friars to a 19-14 record, including a 10-8 mark in the BIG EAST. As he led the team to 19 victories, he established a Providence College record for the most wins by a head coach in his first season. With a 10-8 record in league play, the Friars finished tied for seventh place in the league standings. The team's 19 overall wins and 10 BIG EAST victories marked the most by the Friars since the 2004 season. During the regular season, he saw his team earn two victories over top-20 teams, including an 81-73 win over No. 1 ranked Pittsburgh on February 24. It marked just the second time that the Friars defeated a No. 1 ranked team and the first time in 33 years. Davis also led the team to a win over DePaul in the second round of the BIG EAST Tournament -- the team's first BIG EAST tourney victory since 2003. He also led the team back to the post-season as the Friars earned an at-large bid to the NIT Tournament.

"Keno Davis has been a great addition to our athletic department," Driscoll said. "In just over a year at the College, he has demonstrated that he has the ability to be one of the top coaches in college basketball. Keno accomplished some impressive feats in 2008-09 and he has attracted some talented student-athletes to Providence. All this should ensure that Providence College men's basketball continues to improve and compete in the BIG EAST -- the top conference in the nation."

Driscoll is entering his ninth year at the helm of the Friar athletic department. His efforts were recognized nationally in 2008 when he was named Astro Turf Athletics Director of the Year for Division I Northeast Region. In five of his eight years, he has led the Friars to a top-100 finish in the NACDA Director's Cup Standings, including this year where the College placed 91st. Providence continues to be one of leaders in graduation rates, graduating 93 percent of its student-athletes. Driscoll has overseen the unprecedented growth in fundraising and facilities. During his tenure, the College has set records for six of the last seven years in athletic fundraising. Driscoll has helped orchestrate some of greatest athletic facility improvements ever at Providence. Since 2001, the College has built or renovated almost every athletic facility on campus.
