PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Field Hockey Coach Diane Madl has been selected as an assistant coach for the U.S. Under-16 Olympic Development Select/Futures Elite International Easter Tournament held in the Netherlands. The U.S. annually takes a U-16 team to Holland. The team departs the week prior to Easter, and will tour, train and play test matches together for five days. On Easter weekend, the U-16 team will compete in Valkenswaard at the Easter Tournament.
U.S. Field Hockey extends invitations to Olympic Development Select athletes to join the tour, with the remaining spots being filled by Futures Elite athletes. The Olympic Development Select are the top-50 identified athletes in the Futures Program (within their age group) and are included within the Futures Elite group. The tour is designed to expose aspiring field hockey players to some of the best hockey played in the world. The Dutch have an extensive club system and play a high level of hockey. In 2005, Madl was selected to coach one of three U-19 teams that competed in the USA-Canada Challenge Cup in Vancouver, B.C.
Madl recently completed her fifth season on the sidelines as head coach of the Providence College Field Hockey team. She guided the Friars to an 18-4 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the BIG EAST. Providence claimed a share of the BIG EAST Regular-Season title and advanced to the BIG EAST Championship game in Louisville, Ky. on November 5. The Friars were ranked in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll for nine consecutive weeks, including the top-15 for seven-straight weeks.
