WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Providence College volleyball team (2-16) lost a close one at the University of Hartford (8-8) by the score of 3-2, Friday evening in West Hartford, Conn. PC lost by game scores of 29-31, 30-21, 30-24, 30-32 and 10-15. Senior co-captain Allison Baker (Glastonbury, Conn.) had a great night in a return to her home state posting season-highs of 31 kills, a hitting percentage of .324 and four blocks. Over the past two matches, she has averaged 27.5 kills and a hitting percentage of .314.
The Friars also got an impressive outing from freshman Nonie Ferguson (Davie, Fla.) who tallied season-highs of 19 kills and a hitting percentage of .279. Classmate Amanda Little (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) totaled 34 digs, while senior co-captain Annie Fiorvanti (Northport, N.Y.) had a match-high 49 assists and 13 digs to record her second straight double-double and ninth overall.
As a team the Friars also recorded some impressive totals including a season-highs of .225 hitting percentage, 74 kills, 68 assists and 11.0 blocks.
The first game of the night saw seven ties, with the largest lead for either team at a mere three points, but it was Hartford who came out on top, 31-29. The second game saw PC hold a 24-17 advantage, then win by the score of 30-21. Game three saw PC take control after trailing, 18-16, with a 14-4 run, and win it, 30-24. Game four saw Hartford lead most of the time, but PC managed to tie the score five occasions, but the Hawks came out on top, 32-30. Hartford also controlled the final game, after PC jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, to win the finale, 15-10.
Although it lost, Providence volleyball looks to continue its impressive play as it returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1st. The Friars will travel to Yale and take on the Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m.
