Box Score

DURHAM, N.H. - On Friday, September 16, the Providence College women's soccer team was shutout, 2-0, by the University of New Hampshire. In the loss, sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.) made four saves for the Friars.

With the game scoreless after 35 minutes of play, New Hampshire's Sara Hourihan (a two-time-reigning America East Rookie of the Week and reigning ECAC Player of the Week) got the Wildcats on the board when she sent Ashlee Cieslak's ball past Fedyshyn for the 1-0 lead. Despite taking five shots in the first half, PC couldn't seem to find the back of the net and headed into halftime down by a goal.

Just 20 seconds into the second half, Hourihan netted her second goal of the game when she beat Fedyshyn to the ball and drove it into an empty net, giving UNH a 2-0 lead over the Friars. Senior Kathryn Mahoney (Narragansett, R.I.) had a chance to put PC on the board in the 52nd minute when she sent a shot over Wildcat goalie, Julie Randall, but UNH's Debbie Newman was able to clear the shot from the goal line. Providence had two more opportunities to score when freshman Megan Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.) fired a shot from 15 yards that veered off the left post in the 70th minute. Just five minutes later, UNH's defense beat PC to a loose ball that could have been sent into the open net.

With the loss, Providence falls to 3-3 on the season while New Hampshire improves to 4-2. The Friars return to action on Sunday, September 18 when they host the Connecticut Huskies in their first BIG EAST game of the season. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Providence's Glay Field.
