PROVIDENCE, R.I. - On Sunday, September 18, the Providence College women's soccer team was defeated, 1-0, by the No. 18 University of Connecticut Huskies. In the loss, sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.) made seven saves for the Friars.
The Huskies controlled play throughout much of the first half, taking two shots in the first minute of play. At the 3:27 mark, junior Erin Mastrodonato (Rochester, N.Y.) took what proved to be PC's only shot of the game - a hard shot that was booted away by a UConn defender. Connecticut retaliated with eight shots in the next ten minutes, and a total of 13 in the remainder of the first half. Fedyshyn was solid in net for the Friars, making four saves up until the 43:49 mark when UConn's Niki Cross sent the ball to the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Providence had a chance to score 20 minutes into the second half when freshman Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) fed the ball to Mastrodonato who blew past three Huskies before being shut down by a UConn defender in front of the net. Providence's only corner kick came at the 69:02 mark when freshman Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) sent the ball to the front of the net where Connecticut gained control and shifted play in the other direction. The Friars, who were outshot 10-0 in the second half and 25-1 overall, were able to keep the Huskies scoreless in the second half thanks to a solid defensive effort and three more saves by Fedyshyn.
With the loss, Providence falls to 3-4-0 (0-1-0 BIG EAST) on the season while Connecticut improves to 5-2-1 (1-0-0 BIG EAST). The Friars return to action on Friday, September 23, when they host the South Florida at 1:00 p.m. at Providence's Glay Field.
