PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The second annual Providence College Invitational was a showcase of five highly entertaining matches at PC's Mullaney Gymnasium inside Alumni Hall. High Point and Gardner-Webb each finished a perfect 2-0 on the day, while the host Friars went 0-2.
In the first match of the tournament, Gardner-Webb came back from a 0-2 deficit to post a 3-2 victory over Hartford. Five different Gardner-Webb players posted double-digit dig totals including sophomore Elizabeth Maxwell (Johnsonville, S.C.), who tallied a team-high 16. Sophomore Audra Harrison (Hickory, N.C.) led the offensive charge for the Bulldogs with a match-high 22 kills. Gardner-Webb senior Carrie Brinkley (Kings Mountain, N.C.) added a match-high 52 assists.
Match two of the event featured High Point, which rolled over Sacred Heart, 3-1. Senior Michelle Feiser (Hagerstown, Md.) notched a triple-double in the affair with 15 kills, 23 assists and 12 digs.
The third match of the Invitational was a battle of intra-state rivals as Sacred Heart took on Hartford. The Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead for the second consecutive match, but like the previous contest, the Hawks could not seal the deal. Sophomore Jennifer Monroy (Rahway, N.J.) led Hartford with 23 kills and 15 digs, while teammate Sarah Rasor (Tampa, Fla.) had 11 digs and 10 assists. For the Sacred Heart Pioneers, two players posted double-doubles including sophomore Christie Duffy (Massapequa, N.Y.) who totaled 15 kills and 10 digs. Senior teammate Michelle Clark (Baltimore, Md.) registered the other SHU twin-total with 34 assists and 13 digs.
Friar fans finally saw the host squad in action at the fourth match of the afternoon. PC suffered a 3-0 loss to High Point. PC freshman libero Amanda Little (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) led the Friars with 14 digs, while freshman Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied a team-high seven kills. Sophomore Jamie Kaufman (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) led High Point with 13 kills and 18 digs. Senior Michelle Feiser (Hagerstown, Md.) registered a double-double with 17 assists and 10 kills.
In the finale of the day, PC lost to Gardner-Webb, 3-1. Little finished the match with a match-high 21 digs. Toney had a solid effort with 10 kills, while classmate Nonie Ferguson (Davie, Fla.) totaled 11 kills.
Day Two of the Second Annual Friar Invitational resumes on Saturday, Sept. 17th, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. Providence hits the floor at 4:00 p.m. against Sacred Heart. The Friars will also take on Hartford at 6:00 p.m. in the Invitational finale.
