Women's Soccer Shines in Season Finale - Posts 2-1 Win Over Brown University

10/26/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

On a chilly October 26, the Providence College women's soccer team concluded its 2005 season with a 2-1 defeat over Brown University under the lights at the Bears' Stevenson Field. The win was Providence's first victory over the Bears in the last three meetings between the two teams, and just its fourth in the all-time cross-town series, dating back to 1983.

Providence freshman Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) got things started in the first half, grabbing the ball off of a Brown turnover in the box and firing a quick shot on net that was stopped by Brown goalkeeper Hilary Wilson. Sophomore Ashley Amaral (Cumberland, R.I.) kept PC's momentum going with a shot on net three minutes later that was blocked Wilson. Pettersen was there to grab the rebound though, and send it to the back of the net for a 1-0 PC lead at the 28:15 mark. For Pettersen, the goal was her team-leading third of the season.

The Bears evened things up at 35:33, with a crafty shot by Lindsay Cunningham that went over sophomore goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.), off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net.

The Friars took back their lead less than four minutes later when sophomore Danielle Wieneke (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) got the ball to junior Erin Mastrodonato (Rochester, N.Y.), who then netted a low shot that was out of the reach of a diving Wilson. The goal, which was the first of Mastrodonato's career, also proved to be the game-winner as the Bears and Friars played a scoreless second half.

With the win, the Friars conclude their 2005 season with a 5-11-2 record.
