PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (1-4) defeated Holy Cross (1-3) by the score of 3-2 (28-30, 30-28, 30-23, 22-30, 15-12) this evening in the Friars home-opener at Alumni Hall. Providence totaled a season-high 71 digs led by senior captain Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) who notched her first double-double of the year with match-highs of 26 kills and 22 digs.
With each game decided by seven points or less, the Friars took an early two games to one lead, before losing game four, which knotted the score, 2-2. Providence then rallied for the victory with a deciding 15-12 win in game five.
Junior Allison Baker (Glastonbury, Conn.) posted an impressive match totaling 13 kills and eight digs, while senior Jennifer Backes (Seaford, N.Y.) and junior Annie Fiorvanti (Northport, N.Y.) also posted double-digit totals with 15 digs and 12 digs, respectively. Fiorvanti also posted a match-high 47 assists.
Caitlin Agostinacchi led the Holy Cross offense with 21 kills and also totaled 17 digs.
Providence volleyball returns to action on this weekend as it travels to Fullerton, Calif., for the Four Points Titan Classic. PC will take on Cal State Fullerton on Friday night, Sept. 10 at 10:30 p.m., and both Idaho State (4:00 p.m.) and San Jose State (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 11.
