Providence College Friar Tournament - Day Two Results

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (2-9) concluded the first annual Providence College Friar Tournament with a 3-1 loss to Quinnipiac (2-8) this evening in Mullaney Gymnasium at Alumni Hall. Additionally, Friars senior captain Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) and classmate Gayle Malachowski (Warwick, R.I.) each earned All-Tournament team honors for their performance.

In the Friars' first match of the day, PC lost to Morgan State (6-8) by scores of 24-30, 22-30, 30-28 and 30-27. Cadres (16 kills) and Malachowski (12 kills) turned in impressive totals, along with sophomore Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) who tied her season-high with 15 kills, while adding seven digs.

Senior Jennifer Backes (Seaford, N.Y.) notched a season-high 20 digs in the contest, while junior setter Annie Fiorvanti (Northport, N.Y.) registered 46 assists. Morgan State got a great match from freshman Esther Johnson (Ft. Collins, Colo.) who totaled 17 kills and 13 digs en route to being named Tournament MVP. Sophomore teammate Ashley Alexander (Austin, Texas) also earned All-Tournament honors.

Quinnipiac earned its first win of the season by defeating Gardner-Webb (3-8) earlier in the day by the score of 3-1, and then the Friars by the same token, including scores of 17-30, 30-28, 16-30, 21-30. Cadres fell one dig shy of a double-double in the match as she finished with 22 kills and nine digs. Fiorvanti totaled 39 assists and 12 digs, while junior Allison Baker (Glastonbury, Conn.) had 10 digs. Freshmen Kasey Andinolfi (Branford, Conn.) and Whitney Hassett (East Greenwich, R.I.) also played well for the Friars. Andinolfi registered a robust nine digs, while Jassett added a pair on the scoresheet.

Bobcats senior Janka Lopatto (Haverhill, Mass.) totaled 43 assists, while sophomore Kayln Hundley (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) finished the match with 17 kills and 14 digs. Both earned All-Tournament honors for their play as well.

Earlier in the day, Morgan State defeated Gardner-Webb, 3-1. Providence College volleyball returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 21 as it travels to Hartford to take on the Hawks at 7:00 p.m.
