EDINBURG, Texas - The Providence College volleyball team (0-4) was defeated by host Texas-Pan American (3-0) on Saturday afternoon in day two of the McAllen Holiday Inn UTPA Invitational. The Lady Broncs defeated Providence, 30-15, 30-14 and 30-18. In its second match of the day, Providence lost a tight, 3-2, decision to Louisiana-Monroe (2-2).
In a game against Louisiana-Monroe which saw each match decided by 10 points or less, Providence dropped the first game, 34-32, but rallied with a 30-28 win in both games two and three. Louisiana-Monroe answered with a 30-20 win in game four, forcing a deciding game five. With each team totaling eight kills in the fifth frame, it was Louisiana-Monroe who prevailed by the slimmest of margins, 16-14, keeping the Friars in search of their first win of the year.
Senior captain Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) totaled a season-high and game-high 26 kills in the match and was one of three Friars to accumulate more than 10 kills. Sophomore Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) totaled 15 kills and four digs, while junior Allison Baker (Glastonbury,Conn.) added 10 kills and six digs. Senior Jennifer Backes (Seaford, N.Y.) tallied 13 digs with freshman Sarah Fleming (St. Paul, Minn.) right behind her totaling 12 digs.
Lindsey Ehlert led Louisiana-Monroe with 21 kills and 19 digs.
Earlier in the day against Texas-Pan American, Cadres tallied a team-high six kills, while classmate Backes added 10 digs. Winker Cruz led the Lady Broncs with 11 kills and 11 digs.
Providence volleyball returns to action on Tuesday, September 7. The Friars will host Holy Cross in their home-opener at 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Gym.
