FULLERTON, Calif. - The Providence College volleyball team (1-7) lost its third straight match at the Four Points Titan Classic Saturday evening, falling to San Jose State, 3-0, as it closed out tournament play in Titan Gym. Senior captain Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.), playing in front of her hometown crowd for the first time in her collegiate career, finished the weekend with a team-high 12 kills to go along with nine digs.
Against San Jose State, the Friars lost by scores of 30-18, 30-18, and 30-10. Senior Jennifer Backus (Seaford, N.Y.) chipped in a match-high 14 kills, one shy of her season-high 15 set against Holy Cross last Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, Providence lost to Idaho State, 3-0, by scores of 30-14, 30-13, and 30-17. Junior Annie Fiorvanti (Northport, N.Y.) notched a team-high 19 assists, while sophomore Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) totaled seven kills and four digs. Cadres finished with a team-high eight kills.
In its first match of the tournament late Friday evening, Providence lost, 3-0, to host Cal State Fullerton, 30-13, 30-21, and 30-14. Cadres totaled 10 kills to lead the offense, freshman Sarah Fleming (St. Paul, Minn.) tallied a match-high eight digs and Fiorvanti totaled 18 assists.
Providence volleyball returns to action this Friday, Sept. 17 as it hosts the Providence College Friar Tournament. PC will take on Gardner-Webb at 4:30 p.m. in the opening match of the weekend. At 7:30 p.m. that night, Morgan State will take on Quinnipiac. On Saturday, Sept. 18, Gardner-Webb will open up day two of the tournament as it takes on Morgan State at 9:30 a.m. Gardner-Webb will then take on Quinnipiac at 12:00 p.m., and be followed by Providence against Morgan State at 2:30 p.m. Finally, the Friars close out the weekend with a 5:00 p.m. match against regional foe Quinnipiac. Admission to all matches is free.
