Five Providence College Field Hockey Players Earn National Academic Squad Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Five members of the 2003 Providence College field hockey team have been named to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Team. Junior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.), sophomore Katharine Lary (Canaan, N.H.) and freshmen Emily Ewens (Vancouver, British Columbia), Noel Mahlstadt (Farmingville, N.Y.) and Colleen Walsh (South Easton, Mass.) each earned recognition.

Phillips started all 19 games for the Friars in 2003 as both a forward and midfielder. She finished third among her teammates in scoring with 14 points on six goals and two assists. Phillips currently has a 3.30 grade-point average in marketing. A native of Worcester, Mass., she is the daughter of Lee Phillips and Cynthia Brown.

Lary played 14 games for the Friars before an injury sidelined her for the final five games of the 2003 season. She led the team in scoring (24 points) and assists (eight) and was second on the team in goals scored (eight). Lary was credited with two game-winning goals on the season and tallied assists on three other game-winning goals for the Friars. Lary also finished the regular-season ranked sixth in the BIG EAST in overall scoring. She earned BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors twice, on September 1 and September 15. Lary currently has a 3.72 grade-point average in political science. A native of Canaan, N.H., she is the daughter of Eileen and Ken Lary.

Ewens started all 19 games as a defender in her first season with the Friar program. She was one of three team members to record a team-best two defensive saves in 2003. Ewens currently holds a 3.45 grade-point average. A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, she is the daughter of Peter and Corry Ewens.

Mahlstadt appeared in three games as a defender during her freshman season. Mahlstadt currently has a 3.38 grade-point average. A native of Farmingville, N.Y., she is the daughter of Christine and Eugene Mahlstadt.

Walsh, a freshman forward on the field hockey squad, missed the majority of the 2003 campaign with an injury. She currently has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.41. A native of South Easton, Mass., she is the daughter of Jamie and Ryan Walsh.
