TWIN CITIES, Minn. -- It was announced on February 6 that former Providence College hockey star Ron Wilson was named head coach of the United States hockey team that will compete in the World Cup of Hockey 2004, which will be held on August 30-September 14 in Canada, the United States, Finland, Czech Republic, Sweden and Germany.
Wilson is currently the head coach of the San Jose Sharks and his team is in first place of the Western Conference's Pacific Division.
Prior to his job with San Jose, Wilson was the Head Coach of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and most recently was the head coach of the Washington Capitals. While with the Capitals, Wilson guided the team to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998 and also led the squad to two division titles. In addition, Wilson led the 1996 United States National team to a gold medal in the World Cup. Team USA posted a 6-1-0 record in 1996 as it defeated Team Canada in a best-of-three championship series to claim the title. In 1998, Wilson served as the head coach for Team USA at the Nagano Olympics.
Wilson, a native of East Providence, R.I., is a 1977 graduate of Providence College. Wilson is Providence's all-time leading scorer (250 points). He ranks fifth in career goals (78), first in assists (172) and holds ECAC records for points by a defenseman (250), season points (87), season assists (61), and career assists (172). He is the NCAA all-time leading scoring defenseman. Wilson was a two-time All-American and earned ECAC Player of the Year honors in 1975.
After graduating from Providence, Wilson played in the NHL for seven seasons (Toronto and Minnesota) in addition to a stint in Europe. He is a member of the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame.
