PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College senior Kim Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) was named the recipient of the Honda Sports Award for Cross Country on Monday, December 6. In honor of Smith winning the award, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. will donate $5,000 to the women's athletic program at Providence College.
Smith became the sixth BIG EAST athlete to ever win the Honda Award for cross country and the first Friar to earn the award in its 29-year history. Smith capped off her collegiate career by winning the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championship on November 22 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Smith led from the start and won the race by 18 seconds. In addition to her victory at the NCAA's, Smith captured the NCAA Northeast Regional and BIG EAST championships.
For Smith, it marks the second time that she has earned a Honda Award. In June, she earned the honor for track and field after her brilliant 2003-04 season in which she captured the NCAA Indoor 3,000 and 5,000-meter championships in NCAA record time. She also won NCAA outdoor 5,000-meter championship and set the outdoor 5,000-meter record at the Mt. Sac Relays.
Honda presents an award to one female in 12 different NCAA sports. One of the 12 winners will be selected as the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and will receive the Honda-Broderick Cup. The announcement and presentation of the Honda-Broderick Cup will take place in June of 2005. American Honda Motor Co., Inc. sponsors the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Program.
