PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to Temple, 4-1, in the opening game of the Temple Invitational on Saturday, September 6 in Philadelphia, Pa. Freshman forward Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) scored her second goal of the season and PC's only goal of the day in the loss.
The Friars fell behind 2-0 in the first half as the Owls recorded unassisted goals from Monica Jiao and Jillian Thomas at the 16:38 mark and 11:51 mark, respectively. The Owls came out strong in the second half to score two more goals to take a 4-0 advantage. Haley Devinis scored unassisted with 16:25 remaining in the game and Talia Ruth netted a goal on an offensive corner at the 7:30 mark, assisted by Rachel Kasper and Devinis.
Providence finally got on the scoreboard with 3:12 remaining in the game as McGow scored her second goal of the season, unassisted, making the final score 4-1. Temple only outshot the Friars, 20-14 and held the advantage in penalty corners, 6-2.
Friar goalkeeper Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) played 58 minutes in the cage and registered nine saves, while allowing three Temple goals. Junior Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) relieved Moran with 12 minutes remaining in the second half and allowed one goal while making two saves. Two Temple goalkeepers combined to make 13 saves in the victory. Temple improves to 3-0 overall, while Providence drops to 1-1 on the season.
On Sunday, September 7, Providence will face Michigan State in the consolation game of the Temple Invitational at 11:00 a.m. The Spartans fell to North Carolina, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. During the 2002 season, Michigan State participated in the NCAA Championship semifinal game, where they dropped a 3-0 decision to Wake Forest. MSU ended the season ranked No. 4 in the final national poll. The Friars and the Spartans enter Sunday's game with a 1-1 overall mark in the 2003 season.
