Field Hockey Suffers 9-1 Loss To Michigan State

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Providence College field hockey team was defeated by Michigan State, 9-1, in the consolation game of the Temple Invitational on Sunday, September 7 in Philadelphia, Pa. The Friars' lone goal was scored by senior midfielder Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.). Michigan State, who participated in the semifinals of the 2002 NCAA Championship and finished the season ranked No. 4 in the nation, improves to 2-1 on the season while the Friars fall to 1-2 overall.

The Spartans took a commanding lead in the first half as they scored five unanswered goals to take a 5-0 advantage. Michigan State opened the second half of play with four more goals to lead 9-0 before the Friars got on the board with 12 minutes remaining in the game as Suehnholz netted her second goal of the season. Sophomore Katharine Lary (Canaan, N.H.) was credited with the assist.

Friar goalkeeper Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) played 53 minutes in the cage for PC. She recorded 13 saves and allowed six goals. Junior Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) replaced Moran with 17 minutes left in the game, allowed three goals and registered two saves. Spartan goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy allowed one goal and recorded two saves in 70 minutes of action for the win.

Providence will travel to Holy Cross to take on the Crusaders in non-conference action on Wednesday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Worcester, Mass. The Friars will close out the week with another non-conference game versus Vermont on Sunday, September 14 at 11:00 a.m. on the campus of Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
