WORCESTER, MASS. - The Providence College field hockey team earned its second victory of the season with a 5-4 overtime win over Holy Cross on Wednesday, September 10 in Worcester, Mass. Freshman Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) scored the game-winner with 1:47 remaining in the first overtime session. McGow's goal was assisted by sophomore Katharine Lary (Canaan, N.H.). Lary led the Friars with two goals and two assists.
The Friars opened the scoring in the first half with an unassisted goal from Lary at the 28:28 mark. The Crusaders tied the game 1-1 with 26:08 on the clock as Cathleen Kerman netted a goal from Caitlin Moynihan. The score remained knotted at one goal apiece at the halftime break.
Providence took a 2-1 lead at the 25:35 mark of the second half as senior Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.) connected on her third goal of the season on a penalty corner. Lary was credited with the assist on the play. Junior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) put the Friars up 3-1 on an unassisted goal with 22:02 remaining in the second half, and Lary scored her second goal of the night, unassisted, to give the Friars a 4-1 lead with 20:31 remaining in the game.
At that point, Holy Cross rattled off three-straight goals to tie the game, 4-4, including the goal that forced overtime with just 45 seconds left to play in regulation. Kerman, Tara Welch and Heather Yanusas scored the comeback goals. Moynihan was credited with one assist in the rally, while Jillian LeClair contributed two assists to the cause, including the assist that led to the Crusader's overtime goal.
In the overtime session McGow knocked in her second game-winning goal of the season as Lary fed her the ball inside the circle with 1:47 remaining on the clock.
PC's Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) made two saves and allowed one goal in the cage before being replaced by junior Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) with 17 minutes left regulation. Moran returned to the net for the overtime and made two more saves (total of four in the game) to solidify the victory. Jones made two saves and allowed three goals. Two goalkeepers combined for five saves in the Crusaders' first loss of the 2003 season. Holy Cross falls to 3-1 on the season, while Providence improves to 2-2 overall.
