STAMFORD, Conn. - Senior field hockey player Katie Willett (Biddeford, Maine) and senior women's tennis player Brooke Rubin (Cranston, R.I.) have been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District I Women's At-Large Second Team. The announcement was made by the selection committee on Thursday, May 16, 2002.
Willett, registered a career high in goals (two), assists (three) and points (seven) during her senior season, as the Friars' starting centerback and team captain. Willett was named 2001 STX/NFHCA First Team Regional All-American and First-Team All-BIG EAST for her efforts. Willett also earned NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad honors for the third time in her career, and is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. In 1999-00, she earned GTE Academic All-District Fall/Winter At-Large Second Team honors, and was a Second-Team All-BIG EAST selection during her sophomore and junior seasons. In 1998, Willett was named to the BIG EAST Rookie Team. She also is the recipient of Providence's prestigious 2002 Helen Bert Award, given by the Mal Brown Club. Willett is a marketing major and currently holds a cumulative GPA of 3.88 through the fall semester. She will graduate in May and will begin an internship this summer with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), in Indianapolis, Indiana. A native of Biddeford, Maine, she is the daughter of Kathleen and Michael Willett.
Rubin, who has a cumulative GPA of 3.60 in English, finished the 2001-02 women's tennis season with a 23-6 overall record at No. 1 singles. The 23 wins tied a Providence College single-saeson victory mark, which she set during the 1999-00 season. She captured the 2001 New England Title at No. 1 singles for the second consecutive year. In the spring season, Rubin posted a 12-1 record. On March 5, 2002, Rubin set PC's career wins record as she earned her 79th career victory. She finished her career with an 86-32-1 record. Rubin received the 2002 Sine Quo Non Award, which is given annually to the PC athlete who has distinguished herself among her peers without receiving the proper recognition. A native of nearby Cranston, R.I., she is the daughter of Gloria and Larry Rubin.
