PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Former Providence College hockey star, Ron Wilson, was hired as the Head Coach of the NHL's San Jose Sharks on Wednesday, December 4.
Prior to his job with San Jose, Wilson was the Head Coach of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and most recently with the Head Coach of Washington Capitals. While with the Capitals, Wilson guided the team to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998 and also led the squad to two division titles. In addition, Wilson led the 1996 United States National team to a gold medal in the World Cup. In 1998, he served as the head coach for Team USA at the Nagano Olympics.
Wilson, a native of East Providence, R.I., is a 1977 graduate of Providence College. Wilson is Providence's all-time leading scorer (250 points). He ranks fifth in career goals (78), first in assists (172) and holds ECAC records for: points by a defenseman (250), season points (87), season assists (61), and career assists (172). He is the NCAA all-time leading scoring defenseman.
After graduating from Providence, Wilson played in the NHL for seven seasons (Toronto and Minnesota) in addition to a stint in Europe. He is a member of the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame.
