TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Jimmy Baxter had 16 points to help South Florida beat Providence 68-64 Tuesday night.
The victory gave South Florida coach Seth Greenberg his 200th career victory (200-156). Greenberg, who previously coached at Long Beach State, has a 95-86 record at South Florida.
Baxter scored South Florida's first nine points. Reggie Kohn added 12 points for the Bulls, who have opened the season with consecutive wins.
Providence (1-1) got 21 points from Maris Laksa. Ryan Gomes had 14.
Will McDonald has seven of his 11 points and Marlyn Bryant hit a tiebreaking slam during a 12-4 run to put South Florida ahead 47-45 midway through the second half.
After two lead changes, Kohn's three-pointer and slams by Terrence Leather and Bryant help extend the South Florida advantage to 58-50 with seven minutes to play.
McDonald had two in-close baskets in the final minute that made it 66-57.
Laksa hit three 3-pointers during a 23-5 stretch that gave Providence a 30-19 lead with five minutes left in the first half. The Friars went 6 of 12 from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes.
Kohn connected from long range as South Florida had a late surge in cutting the deficit to 33-29 at halftime.
