Volleyball Readies For BIG EAST Weekend

Providence College Friars (2-21/0-5) - Providence is looking for its first BIG EAST win as they host Seton Hall on Saturday, October 26 and Rutgers on Sunday, October 27. In the Friars' last match, they were defeated, 3-0, at Sacred Heart on Saturday, October 19. Sophomore Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Katie Fleming (Cary, N.C.) notched double figure kills in the match and continue to lead the Friar offense with 284 and 256 kills, respectively. Cadres also leads the Friars in blocks with 41, while senior outside hitter Sandy Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.) is the team leader in digs with 232. Freshman Rachel Tucker (Burleson, Texas) has been Providence's primary setter and leads the team in assists with 491. After this weekend, the Friars will not return home again until a Saturday, November 16 match against St. John's.

Seton Hall University Pirates (9-15/0-5) - The Pirates come to Mullaney Gymnasium looking to win their first BIG EAST match of the season. Seton Hall had lost seven consecutive matches before a non-conference win, 3-0, against Long Island on October 23. In the match, senior outside hitter Kari Belin (Hagerstown, Md.) recorded her 1,000th career kill. On the season, she leads Seton Hall in kills with 277. Sophomore setter Shawn McDonald (Eagan, Minn.) is the team leader in assists with 957. Her 11.39 assists per game average is sixth best in the BIG EAST. Last season, the Pirates defeated the Friars, 3-0 (30-19, 30-20, 30-28), and have not lost to Providence since the 1999 season.

Rutgers University Scarlet Knights (12-8/1-4)* -The match against the Friars will be the second BIG EAST match of the weekend for the Scarlet Knights as they will travel to Boston College on Friday, October 25. Rutgers began the season winning 10 of its first 12 games but have since compiled a 4-6 record. After finishing tied for second place in the conference last year, Rutgers has been hampered with injuries and currently sits in 11th place. Leading the offensive attack for the Scarlet Knights this season, with 322 kills, is junior outside hitter Shayla Bush (Spokane, Wash.). Bush is also leading the team in digs with 316. Senior Pualani Tuyay (San Diego, Calif.) is the Scarlet Knights' primary setter and leads the team with 881 assists. Rutgers has won its last two meetings with the Friars , including last season's 3-0 (30-19, 30-28, 31-29) victory at Providence.
