Volleyball Opens Season With Pair of Losses

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College volleyball team opened the 2001 season at the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday, August 31 when they faced the host, Charlotte 49ers, and Kansas University.

In PC's first match, the Friars lost, 3-2, to Charlotte. Senior outside hitter Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) led the Friars with 16 kills. She added 17 defensive digs and a service ace. Classmate Annie Cella (Burr Ridge, Ill.) added 13 kills and 13 digs in the match while Providence got a good collegiate debut performance from freshman middle blocker Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) chipped in with 14 kills, four service aces and two block assists.

In the second match the Friars were defeated, 3-0, by Kansas. Cella led PC with eight kills and 10 digs and Cadres added six kills and a service ace.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, September 1 with their final games of the Charlotte Invitational, when they face Virginia Commonwealth at 11:00 a.m. and Middle Tennessee St. at 5:30 p.m.
