MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- The Providence College men's golf team finished ninth at the URI Spring Invitational at the Green Valley Country Club in Middletown, R.I., on April 28-29. Providence shot a two-day, two-round total of 689 (358-331). The URI Spring Invitational was won by the University of Rhode Island with a score of 601 (297-304) on the 6,830 yard, par-71 course.
The Friars were led by junior Steve O'Brien (Cranston, R.I.) who finished tied for 34th with a score of 168 (88-80). PC's other golfers were sophomore Ryan Shaw of E. Longmeadow, Mass. (tied 40th, 92-79--171), junior Chris Tobey of Hopkinton, Mass. (tied 42nd, 90-82--172) and senior Jed Mahoney of Narragansett, R.I. (49th, 88-90--178). PC's fifth golfer, senior Ron Taylor of Westerly, R.I., was disqualified on the second day of competition.
Mike Carbone of URI won the individual title with a score of 144 (71-73).
