Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team earned a thrilling 112-105 win against the USDBL in an exhibition game at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Saturday, November 10. For the Friars, it marked the first time the team had scored 100 or more points in an exhibition game since a 107-81 win over Marathon Oil on November 3, 1998. It also was only the third time in Providence College history that both teams scored 100 or more points in an exhibition game.

The Friars, who held a 49-45 lead at halftime, were led by the strong play of junior forward Romuald Augustin (Montreal, Quebec). Augustin led the squad with 12 points, which included two three pointers, in the first 20 minutes of action. Junior guard Abdul Mills (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Leland Anderson (Attleboro, Mass.) each added eight points in the first half. The USDBL kept the score close thanks to the play of 6-7 forward Carlin Hartman, who had 11 points in 13 minutes of action.

Providence came out strong in the second half and it appeared that the Friars would blow the game open as they went on a 14-4 run in the first 3:20 of play and took a 65-51 lead. Augustin made a layup at 14:16 to put the Friars ahead, 71-56, and give the squad its largest lead of the game (15 points). Unfortunately for the Friars, the USDBL heated up from behind the three-point arc and started to bomb. Fred Cofield, Jamar Smiley and Daimon Bethea each hit two three pointers and shot a combined 6-12 from three-point territory in the second half as the USDBL staged a comeback. Lazarus Sims made a layup with 1:28 remaining in the game to give the USDBL a five-point lead (95-90). In the exciting final minute, Sims only made the second of two free throws with 19 seconds remaining to give the USDBL a two-point lead at 98-96. Mills provided the heroics for the Friars as he hit a short jump shot to tie the game with one second left in regulation.

In overtime, the Friars took over the game as they outscored the USDBL, 14-7, to earn the win.

Mills had a game-high 23 points, while Augustin added 22 points. Junior center Marcus Douthit (Syracuse, N.Y.) added a double-double for the Friars with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard John Linehan (Chester, Pa.), who had been troubled by food poisoning, was impressive as he shot 5-6 from the floor and finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Anderson was the other Friar to finish in double figures in scoring as he registered 10 points

Hartman was the high scorer for the USDBL, as he recorded 19 points

Providence College returns to action on Friday, November 16 when the squad opens the regular season against the Siena at the Dunkin' Donuts Center at 7:30 p.m. It will be the Friars' first game of the Las Vegas Tourney. The team will then travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for three games on November 19-21.
