PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars were defeated, 1-0, by Syracuse University in BIG EAST Northeast Division women's soccer action on Sunday, September 24 at Providence, R.I. Syracuse senior forward Erin O'Grady (Glastonbury, Conn.) netted the game's lone goal to give the Orangewomen the victory.
Providence and Syracuse battled through a scoreless first half that featured numerous scoring chances for both squads. A defensive struggle, the Friars totaled five first half shots to the Orangewomen's eight.
The scoreless tie was broken once the second half commenced. O'Grady recorded what proved to be the game-winning goal at 48:02 when she converted on a rebound.
In goal, Syracuse's Katie Karlander (Carmel, Ind.) stopped six Providence shots. PC freshman goalkeeper Caroline Haines recorded 10 saves.
With the win, Syracuse improves its record to 7-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the BIG EAST Northeast Division. Providence's record falls to 2-7-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference action.
The Friars return to action on Friday, September 29, when they host Loyola of Chicago at PC's Glay Field at 3:00 p.m.
