ORONO, Maine -- The Providence College women's soccer team opened the 2000 season with a 2-0 win against Marist College on Saturday, August 26 at the University of Maine. The win marked the first time the Friars have opened a season with a victory since 1997 when PC defeated Rhode Island, 2-1, in overtime.
The Friars scored first when senior forward Melissa Crowley (Duxbury, Mass.) converted on a pass from junior Caitlyn Welsh (Winter Springs, Fla.) for what proved to be the game-winning goal at 26:24. Providence added an insurance goal when Welsh distributed her second assist of the game on a Kate Lyden (Bellingham, Mass.) goal at 64:24.
In goal, Marist's Melanie Nai stopped 11 shots while Providence freshman Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) turned away three attempts in her first collegiate contest.
With the win, PC's record moved to 1-0 on the season while the Red Foxes fell to 0-1.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, August 27, when they take on Iona College in their second game at the Maine Tournament at 11:00 a.m.
