Women's Soccer Falls to Connecticut, 4-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Connecticut defeated Providence College, 4-0, in women's soccer action on August 30 at Providence, R.I. Junior forward Mary-Beth Bowie (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) netted three goals to lead the Huskies as they downed the Friars in the opening game of BIG EAST play.

Bowie scored what proved to be the game-winner on a header off of a corner kick from senior forward Jen Carlson (Shelburne, Vt.) at 7:46. Bowie went on to add Connecticut's final two goals at 58:07 and 60:40 respectively. Bowie's second goal came off of a rebound of that she blasted past Friar goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.). She went added an insurance goal when she slipped the ball past Haines on a partial breakaway.

Junior forward Alexa Borisjuk (North Haven, Conn.) netted UConn's second goal of the game when she scored on a scramble in front of the PC goal at 37:10.

In goal, Connecticut's Maria Yatrakis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made four saves, while PC's Haines stopped nine Huskie shots.

With the win, Connecticut's record improved to 1-0-0 overall and in the BIG EAST, while the Friars fell to 2-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, September 3, when they travel to Notre Dame, Ind. to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
