VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Senior Malik Allen scored 23 points in his final home game and Villanova scored the last nine points to edge Providence, 77-72 on Wednesday night.
Allen hit on 8-of-9 shots and was 7-of-9 from the free throw line as Villanova (18-10, 8-7 Big East) kept its NCAA tournament hopes alive.
Gary Buchanan added 16 points for the Wildcats, while Romuald Augustine and Erron Maxey each had 16 points for the Friars (11-17, 4-11).
Providence took a 72-68 lead on a 3-pointer by Augustine with 2:27 left to play, but Jermaine Medley hit a 3-point shot, and Allen scored on a slam after a steal by Aaron Matthews, to give Villanova a 73-72 advantage at the 1:48 mark.
Maxey missed two foul shots with 17.6 seconds remaining and Ricky Wright made two foul shots for Villanova with nine seconds to go. Medley then made a steal and converted two foul shots for the game's final points.
Villanova trailed 24-17 midway through the first half, but then scored 12 unanswered points capped by a Medley 3-pointer to take a 29-24 lead. An 8-2 spurt by the Friars gave Providence a 32-21 edge at the break.
Villanova, who defeated Providence 66-57 on Jan. 20, has now won five of its last six games, while the Friars had their three-game winning streak snapped.
