PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated Sacred Heart University, 2-1, in women's soccer action on Wednesday, November 1 at Providence, R.I. Junior forward Caitlyn Welsh (Winter Springs, Fla.) led the Friar offense with one goal and one assist in the season finale for both teams.
Sacred Heart recorded the game's first goal at 1:19. Sophomore forward Danielle Robenhymer (Manchester, Conn.) scored on a long chip to beat Friar freshman goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.).
The Friars evened the game at one goal a piece at the 7:26 mark. Welsh converted on a pass from senior midfielder Tricia Brennan (Grafton, Mass.) from inside the box.
Senior Melissa Crowley (Duxbury, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 85:07. Welsh broke down the right side of the field and crossed a ball to the far side of the net. Crowley headed the cross past Pioneer freshman goalkeeper Leslie Konsig (Millburn, N.J.) to give the Friars their second victory in a row.
In goal, PC's Haines stopped one Pioneer shot while Sacred Heart's Konsig recorded seven saves in the loss.
With the victory, Providence concluded the 2000 season with an overall record of 7-11-1.
