PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
FELIPE VIVAR (Sr., Los Cebios, Ecuador.) posted a 3-0 mark in the No.3 singles position. He helped the team register a 2-1 record last week with wins against Rutgers and Boston University. Vivar leads the team with a 21-5 singles mark.
JEFF MERKLINGER (Fr., South Orange, N.J.) led the Friar lacrosse team with a career high five goals in PC's 13-8 win against Canisius College on April 5 in Buffalo, N.Y.

BASEBALL (20-9-1, 5-2-1)... The Friars were 4-2-1 for the week including Monday's 17-10 win over Rhode Island. During that time, the Friars were also 2-1-1 in BIG EAST play to move into fourth place in the league standings. PC opened the week with a 24-3 win over Holy Cross. ANDY SCOTT (Fr., Milltown, N.J.) got the win. KEITH REED (So., Auburn, Mass.) hit for the cycle going 5-6 with six rbi's and PAUL COSTELLO (Jr., Milton, Mass.) was 4-6 with four rbi's to lead PC. On Wednesday, the Friars and Boston College Eagles got together for a 17-17 slugfest that was called after seven innings due to cold and darkness. PC fell behind 7-0 and 10-3 in the game before rallying to go ahead 17-12. The Eagles scored one in the sixth and four in the seventh to tie the game at 17. That's the way that game goes into the record books. On Thursday, PC traveled to Quinnipiac to face the Braves. Again, PC fell behind early, but rallied and tied the game with three in the ninth to make it 11-11. Quinnipiac's Joe Zangari led off the ninth with a homer to give the Braves a 12-11 win.
The Seton Hall series was important to the Friars to stay among the top six in the BIG EAST. Game One saw PAT CAREY (Sr., Stony Point, N.Y.) give PC a 4-0 lead with a three-run homer. Seton Hall rallied to tie the game as Dan Hummel delivered a three-run homer to make it 4-4. BRYAN TAMUL(Gr., Pawtucket, R.I.) delivered a game winning double in the seventh to give MIKE GALLIGAN (Jr., Plainville, Mass.) the win in relief. Seton Hall pounded out 22 hits in the 16-8 win in the second game. Game Three saw MARC DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) pitch a complete game to improve to 5-2 on the year. He gave up eight hits. The Friars' rallied from a 5-0 deficit to go up 13-5 before the final of 13-7. COSTELLO was 3-5 with three rbi's and JASON HAIRSTON was 2-4 with three rbi's in the game. On Monday, PC pounded out 21 hits in beating URI, 17-10.
MEN'S GOLF...The golf team returned to action by finishing second at the Yale Invitational on Saturday, in New Haven, Connecticut. Providence had a 311 to Holy Cross' 306 while the Friars edged Central Connecticut, by one stroke for second on the par 70, 6,668 yard course. ROB BRENNAN (Jr., Springfield, Mass.) was fourth overall with a 74. BEN BRIDGEO tied for 16th with a 78 while DEAN CASHMAN tied for 26th with a 79.
WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College women's outdoor track team competed at the University of Connecticut Invitational on April 4. Senior Marie McMahon (Ennistymon, Ireland), junior Sarah Dupre (Kingston, Ontario) and sophomore Dana Ostrander (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) each earned wins for the Friars. McMahon finished first in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:35.25. Dupre won the 3,000 meters (9:55.60) and Ostrander captured the 1,500 meters (4:42.47). Junior Gladys Ganiel of Harrington, Maine (3,000 meters), freshman Stephanie O'Reilly of Wicklow, Ireland (1,500 meters) and Erin Murphy of Shrewsbury, Mass. (800 meters) all finished in second place.
SOFTBALL (11-15-2)... The Friars were 2-5-2 this week overall giving them an 11-15-2 mark on the season and a 1-5-1 tally in BIG EAST games. Providence defeated Villanova in extra innings for a 4-2 win on Sunday for their first BIG EAST win of the season. Freshman Kerri Jacklets smacked a ninth inning two-run homer to give the Friars the edge. Freshman pitcher Robyn West earned her eighth win on the mound. Earlier in the week, the Friars lost two games to Boston College then dropped two games to Notre Dame. Providence split with Dartmouth, winning the first game 7-3 then tying 0-0 as the games was called because of darkness. Junior centerfielder Maureen Moore leads the squad batting .329 at the plate including a team high 28 hits. Jacklets has 19 hits and is batting .253.
MEN'S TENNIS (10-4)... The Friars recorded a 2-1 mark last week. On April 2, PC defeated Boston University, 7-0, at Providence. Senior Dylan Williams of Middlesex, England (No. 1 singles), junior Jamie Williams of Middlesex, England (No. 2 singles), senior Felipe Vivar of Los Cebios, Ecuador (No. 3 singles), freshman Paco Fabian of Norwalk, Conn. (No. 4 singles), freshman Chris Riccobono of Franklin Lakes, N.J. (No. 5 singles) and senior Kevin Ryan of Pittsford, N.Y. (No. 6 singles) all earned singles wins. On April 4, the Friars earned a 5-2 win against Rutgers at Providence. Dylan Williams, Jamie Williams, Vivar and Fabian each recorded singles wins for the Friars. In the team's final match of the week, PC traveled to Dartmouth College and was defeated by the Big Green, 5-2. Vivar registered to lone singles win for the Friars.
LACROSSE (3-4, 2-3)... The Providence College Friars posted a 1-0 mark last week. On April 5, PC defeated MAAC foe Canisius College, 13-8, at Buffalo, N.Y. Freshman Jeff Merklinger (South Orange, N.J.) led the Friar offense with a career high five goals. Sophomore Dan Moran (Skaneateles, N.Y.) also helped pace the Friar attack with four goals. Junior Rob Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) posted 19 saves in net.
