PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team (2-2) defeated University of Rhode Island (2-2) in straight sets (3-0) on Friday, Sept. 5 in Providence, R.I., in the opening match of the Ocean State Cup.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence earned a 25-11 victory in the first set.
- Providence came out strong with a 6-2 run, forcing a Rhode Island timeout.
- The Rams called another timeout after a 10-2 run by the Friars (16-4).
- An ace by junior Miller McDonald (Dallas, Texas) extended the Friars lead to 20-8.
- Redshirt senior Hadley Pride (Nashville, Tenn.) ended the set with an ace to secure the 25-11 win.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-19.
- Providence came out quick to take an 8-3 lead.
- Freshman Kaia Easterbrook (Canton, Ga.) had a kill to extend the lead to 16-12, forcing a Rhode Island timeout.
- A kill by junior Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) further advanced the Providence lead to 19-14.
- Sophomore Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) sealed the set with a kill (25-19).
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the set 25-19, and the match 3-0.
- The two teams went back-and-forth early, tying the set at 11-11.
- Providence went on a 6-3 run, forcing a Rhode Island timeout (16-13).
- The Rams took their second timeout after a kill by Adkins (22-16).
- Adkins ended the set with a kill to win 25-19 and take the game 3-0.
MATCH NOTES:
- Pride led the team in digs with 10.
- Adkins led the offense with 16 kills.
- Taylor hit .600 with 13 kills.
- Easterbrook notched five blocks.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will return to action tomorrow (Sept. 6) for the second and final day of the Ocean State Cup. Their first match of the day is slated for 1:00 p.m. against Brown.
