Volleyball Defeats New Orleans, 3-1, To Conclude Pelican Invitational

The Friars will open BIG EAST play on Sept. 26 at Marquette.

NEW ORLEANS, La.- The Providence College volleyball team (9-4) defeated New Orleans (5-7) in four sets on (3-1) on Saturday, Sept. 20, to close out the Pelican Invitational.

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: New Orleans earned a 25-24 victory in the first set.
  • The two teams traded points early, tying the set at 12-12.
  • A kill by freshman Tori Otter (Rogers, Ark.) eventually tied the set again at 17-17.
  • New Orleans took the lead, 23-22, forcing a Providence timeout.
  • The Privateers maintained their lead and won the set, 26-24.
 
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-18.
  • Providence came out strong with a 5-1 lead, forcing a New Orleans timeout.
  • The Privateers took another timeout after a 4-0 run by the Friars (9-1).
  • A kill by junior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) extended PC's lead to 19-12.
  • The Friars maintained their lead and won the set, 25-18.
 
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took the third set, 25-22.
  • New Orleans jumped out to a 10-6 advantage, forcing a Providence timeout.
  • The Friars went on a 7-2 run to reclaim the lead (13-12).
  • A kill by freshman Fielding Mayhugh (Weston, Mass.) advanced PC's lead to 21-19.
  • Providence maintained its lead to win the set, 25-22.
 
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the set, 25-20 and the match 3-1.
  • Providence came out quick with a 10-7 lead, forcing a New Orleans timeout.
  • The Privateers took another timeout after a kill by Otter put the Friars ahead, 17-13.
  • A kill by Adkins secured the set for PC, 25-20, and the match 3-1.
 
MATCH NOTES:
  • Adkins, Mayhugh and Otter each recorded double-digit kills, finishing with 20, 11 and 10, respectively.
  • Redshirt senior Hadley Pride (Nashville, Tenn.) led the defense with 26 digs.
  • Berry recorded 10 blocks.
  • The Friars notched 57 kills, 10 aces, 15 blocks and 72 digs.
     
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars hit the road next weekend to begin BIG EAST Conference play. They will face Marquette on Friday, Sept.  26 at 8:00 p.m. (ET). Providence will then play DePaul on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 5:00 p.m. (ET).
