NEW ORLEANS, La.- The Providence College volleyball team (8-3) defeated Alabama State University (0-10) in straight sets (3-0) on Friday, Sept. 19, in the opening match of the Pelican Invitational.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence earned a 25-17 victory in the first set.
- Providence came out strong with a 10-4 lead.
- The Hornets narrowed the gap to 13-12, forcing a Friar timeout.
- A kill by freshman Kaia Easterbrook (Canton, Ga.) extended PC's lead to 19-15.
- Providence maintained its lead, winning the set 25-17.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-14.
- The two teams played evenly, tying the set at 6-6.
- A kill by junior Miller McDonald (Dallas, Texas) gave Providence a 15-10 advantage.
- The Friars extended their lead to 18-11 with a kill by sophomore Audrey Kocon (Shoreview, Minn.), forcing a Hornets timeout.
- Providence maintained its lead to win the second set 25-14.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the set 25-21, and the match 3-0.
- The teams traded points early, tying the set at 6-6.
- Alabama State called a timeout after a kill by Kocon gave Providence a 15-10 lead.
- Sophomore Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a kill to extend PC's lead to 20-16.
- Junior Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) had an ace to win the set, 25-21 and secure the match 3-0.
MATCH NOTES:
- Kocon recorded a triple-double, with 14 kills, 15 assists, and 11 digs.
- Redshirt senior Hadley Pride (Nashville, Tenn.) led the defense with 20 digs.
- Junior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) led the team in blocks with five.
- The Friars notched 44 kills, six aces, six blocks and 56 digs.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will return to action tonight (Sept. 19) at 7:30 p.m. (ET) against Tulane.
