Volleyball Set To Compete At Pelican Invitational

The Friars first match is set for Friday, Sept. 19, at 1:00 p.m. (ET) against Alabama State.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team will travel to New Orleans, La. to compete in the Pelican Invitational. The Friars will play on Friday, Sept. 19 at 1:00 p.m. (ET) against Alabama State and 7:30 p.m. (ET) against Tulane. On Saturday, Sept. 20, Providence will face New Orleans at 1:00 p.m. (ET). Providence's first two matches will be hosted at Tulane, while its third match will be played at New Orleans.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… The Friars enter the tournament with a 7-3 record. Most recently, Providence won the 20th Annual Friar Classic, posting wins over Central Connecticut (3-1), Merrimack (3-0) and Holy Cross (3-0). Sophomore Sophia Akins (Cincinnati, Ohio) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and redshirt senior Hadley Pride (Nashville, Tenn.) and junior Macy Taylor (Rowlett, Texas) earned All-tournament Team accolades.

Adkins leads the team in kills, with 134. Last weekend, she notched 45 kills through three matches, and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

Pride leads the team in digs (185) and ranks first in the BIG EAST in digs per set (5.14 dps).

Junior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) leads the team in blocks, with 49. She ranks first in the BIG EAST in blocks per set (1.46). 
 
SCOUTING ALABAMA STATE…  The Hornets enter the tournament with a 0-9 record. Most recently, Alabama State competed at the Furman Invitational and lost to Furman (3-0), Winthrop (3-1) and North Florida (3-1).

Senior Jyriah Morgan was named to the All-Tournament Team. She leads the team in kills, with 115.

Sophomore Kamrynn Clay leads the team in assists, with 146, and averages 4.71 assists per set.

Senior Sierra Scanlan leads the team with 62 digs.
 
SCOUTING TULANE… The Green Wave enter the tournament with a 5-3 record. Most recently, they competed at the Jaguar Invitational and defeated Southeastern Louisiana (3-1) before losing to South Alabama (3-1).

Junior Avery Burks leads the team in kills, with 145.

Junior Zoe Rachow leads the team in assists, with 238, averaging 7.21 per set.

Sophomore Dayla Ortiz leads the team in digs, with 123.
 
SCOUTING NEW ORLEANS… The Privateers enter the tournament with a 5-5 record. Most recently, they competed at the Southland-SWAC Challenge, and earned wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-0), Southern (3-0) and Grambling (3-0). New Orleans lost to Alabama A&M (3-1).

Senior Courtney Roundtree was named to the All-Tournament Team. She leads the team in kills, with 115.

Junior Defne Eciroglu leads the team in assists, with 252, averaging 7.20 per set.

Junior Celia Mbaya leads the team in digs, with 109.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars are on the road next weekend to begin BIG EAST play. Their first match is on Friday, Sept. 26, at 8:00 p.m. (ET) against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. On Saturday, Sept. 27, Providence will face DePaul at 5:00 p.m. (ET) in Chicago, Ill.
