Volleyball Sweeps Holy Cross, 3-0

The Friars will return to action on Friday, Sept. 19, at 1:00 p.m. (ET) against Alabama State in New Orleans, La.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team (7-3) team defeated Holy Cross (3-7) in straight sets (3-0) on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars went 3-0 on the weekend.

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence earned a 25-19 victory in the first set.

·         Providence came out strong with a 10-7 lead.

·         Holy Cross tied the set at 17-17, forcing a Providence timeout.

·         The Friars went on a 6-2 run, forcing a Crusader timeout (23-19).

·         Blocks by sophomore Audrey Kocon (Shoreview, Minn) and junior Lyric Berry (Wylie, Texas) secured the set for PC, 25-19.


SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the second set, 25-17.

·         Providence jumped out to a 12-3 advantage.

·         The Crusaders narrowed the gap to 14-9, forcing a Friar timeout.

·         A kill by sophomore Sophia Adkins (Cincinnati, Ohio) advanced PC's lead to 20-11.

·         Providence maintained its lead, winning the set 25-17.


THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence won the set, 25-23, to claim the match (3-0).

·         The teams traded points early, will the set tied at 11-11.

·         A kill by Adkins gave Providence a 16-14 advantage.

·         Berry had a kill to extend PC's lead to 21-19.

·         Providence clinched the match, winning the final set, 25-23.


MATCH NOTES:

·         Adkins led the team in kills with 21.

·         Berry recorded five blocks.

·         Redshirt senior Hadley Pride (Nashville, Tenn.) led the defense with 26 digs.

·         The Friars notched 44 kills, 10 blocks, and 53 digs.


WHAT'S NEXT: The Providence College volleyball team will return to action next weekend (Sept. 19- Sept. 20) in New Orleans, La. for the Pelican Invitational. The Friars open play on Friday, Sept. 19 at 1:00 p.m. (ET) against Alabama State, followed by a game at 7:30 p.m. against Tulane. They will then face New Orleans on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
