Friars Defeat Villanova On Senior Day, 63-56

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Villanova, 63-56, on senior day at Alumni Hall on Sunday, Feb. 23. Olivia Olsen paced the Friars with her 10th double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 boards. The Friars improved to 12-18 overall (5-12 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats dropped to 16-12 overall (10-6 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence took a 12-8 lead into the first media timeout (4:13). Four of the five starters recorded a bucket for PC in the opening 5:47 of play, led by Emily Archibald's five points.
• The Friars' defense held the Wildcats scoreless for over four minutes while mounting a 15-8 advantage on the scoreboard.
• Maddie Burke hit a three with less than a minute to play to end the scoring drought for Villanova, but Archibald matched it on the other end to give the Friars an 18-11 lead at the intermission.
• Archibald finished the quarter with nine points.
2ND QUARTER:
• A 9-1 run by the Wildcats cut the deficit to one (21-20), forcing a Providence timeout with 7:14 on the clock.
• Brynn Farrell scored with 6:13 remaining to push Providence's lead to 23-20.
• The Friars were scoreless for the next six minutes of play as Villanova reclaimed the lead with 3:27 to play.
• Olsen halted the Friars' drought and gave her squad a 25-24 edge with 11 seconds to play.
• The Wildcats sank a pair of free throws to close the quarter and take a 26-25 advantage into halftime.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars scored four-straight points out of the gate to force a 'Nova timeout just 43-seconds into the action. The spurt gave Providence a 29-26 lead.
• Villanova hit a three to stem the tide, but Providence answered with a 5-0 spurt to claim a 35-29 lead with 5:33 on the clock.
• Villanova regained the lead for the first time in the quarter on a three-pointer from Burke at 2:44.
• The teams traded baskets in the final 1:31 and Providence went into the intermission with a 42-41 lead.
4TH QUARTER:
• Maddie Webber scored the first bucket of the quarter to give the Wildcats a 43-42 lead.
• A 4-0 spurt by the Friars from the foul line put PC ahead 46-43 with 8:13 on the clock.
• Villanova inched within one on two occasions during the next four minutes of play, but each time the Friars had an answer.
• The Friars grabbed a 57-52 lead with a 4-0 spurt at the 3:25 mark.
• The Friars were assessed an intentional foul with 1:48 left on the clock. Kaitlyn Orihel converted both free throws and the Wildcats got the ball out of bounds.
• Providence weathered a series of turnovers after initially getting defensive stops.
• Grace Efosa broke through offensively with a lay-up to extend PC's lead to 59-54 with 53-seconds left.
• Farrell sealed the game at the free throw line, hitting 4-4 attempts in the final 18-seconds.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Olsen recorded her team-best 10th double-double on 18 points and 12 rebounds. She shot 8-17 from the floor and added two assists and one steal.
• Farrell finished the day with 17 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a career-high eight assists.
• Farrell was 8-8 from the free-throw line on the day and has hit 28-consecutive attempts from the line spanning the last 11 games.
• Archibald matched her season-high in scoring with 12 points and added five rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.
• The Friars dominated the glass with a 47-28 advantage in rebounding. It marked the Friars second-highest rebounding total of the season.
• Webber (17) and Burke (13) paced Villanova in the scoring column.
