Friars Defeat Georgetown On The Road In Regular-Season Finale, 66-62

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Georgetown, 66-62, on March 1 at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C. Grace Efosa scored 10 of her team-high 19 points in the final five minutes of play to help seal the win. The Friars improved to 13-18 overall (6-12 BIG EAST) and claimed the No. 7 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. Georgetown dropped to 11-18 overall (4-14 BIG EAST) and will be the No. 10 seed in the tournament. The Friars and Hoyas will meet for a third time this season in the First Round of the tournament on Friday, March 7 at 1:30 p.m.
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence used a 9-0 run during a span of 1:29 to claim a 9-3 lead and force a Georgetown timeout with 6:36 on the clock.
• Providence extended its run to 14-0 on a Marta Morales Romero three and a pair of foul shots by Emily Archibald (14-3).
• A 5-0 spurt by the Hoyas cut the deficit to six (14-8), but Providence countered with a 6-0 run to get the lead back out to double digits (20-8) with 1:02 to play.
• The Friars led 20-10 at the intermission.
2ND QUARTER:
• Georgetown cut the deficit to three on two occasions in the second quarter at 28-25 and 30-27.
• Olivia Olsen scored with seven-seconds left in the quarter to make it a 32-27 game at the half.
• Olsen scored eight points in the quarter on 3-3 shooting and went into the locker room with a team-best 12 points.
• Kelsey Ransom led Georgetown with 13 points at the half, including 10 in the second quarter.
• The Friars outscored Georgetown 15-5 in points off turnovers in the first half
• Providence also dished 11 assists on 12 made field goals in the first half, while shooting 46-percent (12-26).
3RD QUARTER:
• The Hoyas crept within 37-35, but the Friars responded with a 9-2 scoring run to get their lead to nine (46-37) with 2:47 remaining.
• Providence outscored Georgetown 16-15 in the quarter overall to take a 48-42 lead into the final 10 minutes.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars pushed their lead back to double figures through the first two-minutes of play (54-44).
• Georgetown cut the lead to one on two occasions, but each time Efosa had an answer for Providence.
• The Friars led 64-59 with 1:36 to play, but fouled Hession behind the arc with 1:20 to play. She hit all three free throws to make it a two-point game (64-62).
• Providence was unable to get a bucket on its next possession and the Hoyas called timeout with 21.5-seconds left in the game, trailing by two.
• The Friars forced a turnover on the ensuing play and called timeout to advance the ball with 10.1-seconds to play.
• Efosa was fouled and sent to the line with 8.5 seconds left, where she sank both free throws to make it a two-possession game (66-62).
• The Hoyas were unable to get a clean look on their final possession.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Efosa finished the game with a team-best 19 points. She scored 12 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, including 10 points in the final five minutes of the game. Efosa also dished four assists.
• Olsen scored 16 points on 6-7 shooting from the field and grabbed four rebounds.
• Morales Romero filled the stat sheet with a solid line, finishing the day with nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and one blocked shot.
• The Friars ended a six-game winless streak against Georgetown, earning their first victory over the Hoyas since Jan. 23, 2022.
• Providence has only won two games against Georgetown at McDonough Arena since the 1995-96 season.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will begin BIG EAST Tournament action on Friday, March 7. Providence enters the tournament as the No. 7seed and will face No. 10 seed Georgetown in the First Round at 1:30 p.m. The tournament will be played at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The winner of Friday's First Round game will advance to the Quarterfinals to face No. 2 seed Creighton.
