Women's Hoops Falls To DePaul On The Road, 62-56

Marta Morales Romero netted a season-high 18 points.

CHICAGO, ILL. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to DePaul, 62-56, on Sunday, Jan. 12 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. Providence dropped to 8-11 overall (1-5 BIG EAST), while DePaul evened its record at 9-9 (4-1 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• DePaul opened the scoring after winning the tip, but the Friars responded with a 10-0 run over the next 2:40.
• After an officials' timeout to review a foul, DePaul went on a 14-1 run to claim a 16-11 lead with 3:32 remaining on the clock, forcing a Providence timeout.
Brynn Farrell scored four-straight points out of the break to make it a one-point game (16-15), but DePaul closed the frame with a 6-2 scoring advantage.
• The Blue Demons led 22-17 after one quarter of play.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence regained the lead (29-25) with 1:50 left in the second quarter after outscoring DePaul, 12-3.
• The Blue Demons went scoreless for over five minutes until Jorie Allen converted a bucket in the paint at the 1:28 mark (29-27).
• The Friars took a 31-29 lead into halftime, having outscored DePaul 14-7 in the second quarter overall.
Grace Efosa tallied a team-best 12 points on 5-10 shooting.
Marta Morales Romero contributed eight points on 3-3 shooting, including 2-2 from beyond the arc.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• DePaul used an 11-2 to claim its largest lead of the game heading into the media timeout with 4:58 on the clock (40-33). 
• The Friars' shot 0-6 from the field through the opening 5:02 of the third quarter, with their only points coming from the foul line.
• Morales Romero hit a baseline triple, her third three of the game, out of the timeout. 
• Her bucket sparked a 6-0 run to get the Friars within one (40-39) with 2:41 remaining.
• DePaul responded with a 6-0 run during a span of 1:23 before Efosa got Providence back on the board from the free-throw line.
• The Friars trailed 46-40 heading into the fourth quarter
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Efosa opened the scoring in the fourth with a mid-range jumper at the 7:32 mark (46-42).
Sarah Bandoma followed up with a lay-in from the left block to make it a two-point game (46-42) at 6:46.
• Another triple from Morales Romero with 2:43 to play got Providence within 50-49, but DePaul matched it on the other end.
• With 1:34 remaining in the game, Taylor Johnson-Matthews hit a pair of free throws to extend DePaul's lead to 55-51. 
• Efosa countered with a lay-up, but DePaul converted 6-8 free throw attempts over the next 38-seconds to earn its largest lead of the game (61-53).
• Morales Romero hit her career-best fifth three pointer of the game with 11-seconds left in regulation.
• DePaul held on for a 62-56 victory. 
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Morales Romero finished with a season-high 18 points on 6-10 shooting from the field, including a 5-8 showing from beyond the arc. She also added five rebounds and two assists.
• Efosa added 17 points and four rebounds, while Olivia Olsen contributed 10 points and seven boards.
• Farrell grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds and recorded seven points, two assists, one block and one steal.
• DePaul shot just 29-percent from the field (16-55) but were +8 on the scoreboard from the free throw line, hitting 23-30 attempts.
• Providence shot 40-percent from the field (18-45) and were 15-20 from the stripe (.750).
• Rebounds were even at 35-35.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 15 against Xavier. The game will be played at Alumni Hall / Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
