SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated Bryant, 2-1, in non-conference action on Sunday, Sept. 1 in Smithfield, R.I. The Friars improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs also leveled their record at 1-1. Senior
Bella DelNegro (Sterling, Mass.) notched the Friars' game-winning goal with 9:02 remaining in regulation.
GAME FLOW:
• The game was locked in a scoreless tie at halftime.
• Through the first two quarters of play, Providence led in shots (2-1), shots on goal (1-0) and offensive corners (4-0).
• Graduate student
Ally DeCoste (Braintree, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season to give the Friars a 1-0 advantage at the 32:55 mark in the third quarter.
• Sophomore
Florencia Talarico (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was credited with the assist.
• The Bulldogs tied the game, 1-1, at 39:44 on a goal from Alexa Sedicino.
• The Friars were awarded a penalty stroke at 42:11, but were unable to regain the lead as the Bulldog's goalkeeper was able to save the attempt by
Caroline Krebs (Louisville, Ky.).
• The game remained tied, 1-1, heading into the fourth quarter.
• DelNegro scored the go-ahead goal for the Friars in a man-down situation at the 50:58 mark. She was assisted by
Celia Preveza (Danbury, Conn.).
• Providence kept the offensive pressure on, earning back-to-back corners in 55
th minute of play, but could not convert the insurance goal.
• Bryant earned its first penalty corner of the game with four minutes left in regulation, but the shot attempt sailed wide.
• The Friars recoded their eighth corner of the game at 57:32.
Bo Martina (Nieuw Vennep, Netherlands) and
Macie Pennisi (Raleigh, N.C.) each put shot attempts on target, but both were cleared away by Bryant goalkeeper Maud van Lierop.
• Providence closed out the game for the 2-1 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-1 overall.
• The Friars led the game in shots (9-2), shots on goal (8-1) and penalty corners (8-1).
• With the win, Head Coach
Diane Madl earned her 200
th victory at Providence College.
• Providence improved to 8-0 all-time versus Bryant, including a 7-0 mark in NCAA Division I match-ups.
• DeCoste's goal was the 15
th of her career.
• DelNegro's goal marked the fourth of her career and second game-winning goal with the Friars.
