Men’s Soccer To Face Hofstra and UMass On The Road

The Friars will play at Hofstra on Aug. 29 and at UMass on Sept. 2.


PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College men's soccer team (1-0-1) will travel to Hempstead, N.Y. to play the Hofstra Pride (1-0-1) on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7:00 p.m. The Game will be streamed on FloSports. The Friars will then take on the University of Massachusetts Amherst (0-0-2) on Monday, Sep. 2 in Amherst, Mass., at 4:00 p.m. The match will be available for stream on EPSN+.

RESULTS
The Friars enter this week with one win and one tie after their first two games of the season. Providence defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 2-0, at home on Aug.22. The team went on to tie the Boston College Eagles, 1-1, on Aug.26.

RETURNERS 
The Friars return 24 players from last year's roster including four multi-goal scorers.
 
The 2024 BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year,  Lukas Burns returns for his fifth and final season with the Friars. Since becoming Providence's starting goalkeeper in 2021, Burns has played in over 50 career games, boasting a 1.17 goals against average and a .708 save percentage. He has recorded 16 shutouts and holds a career record of 20-12-12. Last season, Burns finished with a career-high seven shutouts, tying him for second in the BIG EAST. He was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, and the College Soccer News Men's National Team of the Week. Over the years, Burns has earned numerous accolades, including a BIG EAST All-Tournament Selection in 2021, three BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors, and two mentions on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
 
Sophomore midfielder, Pearse O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn.) enters his second year at Providence. In his freshman season, O'Brien led the team with seven assists. He also scored three goals and was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week (9/5/23) after netting his first career goal against Hofstra and assisting on the game-winning goal against URI.
 
Midfielder Luis Garcia enters his fifth season for Providence. Last season, Garcia started in two games for the Friars before suffering a season-ending injury. Throughout his career, Garcia has played in 45 matches for the Friars, tallying seven goals and nine assists. He is a two-time Preseason All-BIG EAST selection and has earned spots on the All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2021 and the All-BIG EAST Third Team in 2020-21. In 2022, Garcia gained national attention, being named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men's Players to Watch List for midfielders and the Hermann Trophy Watch List. He was also selected for the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region First Team in 2021.
 
Defender Cole Dewhurst will close out his collegiate career this season for the Friars. Dewhurst started all 17 games for Providence last season, scoring a career-high two goals and earning a spot on the  All-BIG EAST Third Team.
 
Midfielder Diego Batista will begin his second season for Providence. Batista joined the Friars last year for the 2023 campaign as a transfer student from Monroe College. Batista concluded the 2023 campaign with one goal and five assists which earned him an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection. At Monroe College, Batista led the Mustangs to a Regional Championship title and a NJCAA DI National Championship title. He was named NJCAA DI Player of the year.
 
Junior Bruno Rosa (Cascais, Portugal) returns for a second season for the Friars. Rosa joined the team last year as a transfer student from Monroe College with teammate Batista. In his first season with Providence, Rosa played in all 17 games with five appearances in the starting lineup. He tallied four goals and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (10/23/23) following a two-goal performance against Butler. At Monroe, Rosa finished top six in assists for NJCAA Division I. Rosa has tallied one assist so far this season.
 
Graduate student midfielder Rodrigo Vaza (Torres Vedras, Portugal) returns for his second season with Providence. He joined the Friars as a transfer student from Franklin Pierce University. Vaza concluded the 2023 campaign with 14 starts, two goals and one assist. At Franklin Pierce, he helped lead the Ravens to two Northeast-10 Conference Tournament titles and an NCAA Division II national title in 2022. Vaza was named to the Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference Team.
 
Graduate student defender Bernardo Prego (Evora, Portugal) comes back for his second season with the Friars. Prego joined the Friars last year as a transfer student from Franklin Pierce along with fellow teammate Vaza. He played in eight games for Providence before suffering a season-ending injury. While with the Ravens, Prego was named to the Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference (2022) and to the Division II All-East Region Second Team (2022). He was a recipient of the Northeast-10 Elite-24 Award.
 
NEWCOMERS
The Friars welcome eight freshmen and five transfers to the 2024 roster.
 
The freshmen include Julian Ballester (Preston, Conn.), Gabriel Chavez (Wethersfield, Conn.), Vasco Teixeira (Arrentela, Portugal), Krystian Golen (Toronto, Canada), Steban Lopera (Revere, Mass.), Khayr Ogaunsanya (Sicklerville, N.J.), Christian Haikal (North Easton, Mass.) and Ryan Carney (Dunstable, Mass.).
 
Defender Teixeira has recorded an assist in each of the Friars' two games to open the season.
 
Graduate Midfielder Kevin Castañeda (Providence, R.I.)  joins the Friars after four seasons with the University of Rhode Island where he was captain of the 2023 squad. Castañeda played in 54 games with 47 appearances in the starting lineup. He tallied six goals and seven assists with the Rams.
 
Graduate forward Aidan Davock (Medway, Mass.) joins Providence after four seasons at Colgate University. Davock started 40 of his 45 appearances at Colgate where he recorded 14 goals including seven game-winners. Davock netted two goals in the First Round of the Patriot League Tournament to deliver the Raiders to their first playoff win since 2018.  He was named to the All-Patriot League First Team (2023), Patriot League All-Tournament Team (2023), All-Patriot League Second Team (2022) and to the All-Patriot Third Team (2020-21).  Davock's older brother, Trevor, was a graduate transfer for the Friars' 2019 squad where he recorded four game-winning goals including the golden goal at Penn State in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Davock most recently scored the equalizing goal at Boston College to help the team to a 1-1 tie against the Eagles.
 
Graduate midfielder Israel Neto (Salvador, Brazil) joins the Friars after four seasons at Caldwell University. Neto registered 38 starts with 41 total appearances. He recorded 25 goals and 18 assists over his career with the Cougars. Neto finished the 2023 season second in the CACC with 13 goals and 32 points that earned him CACC Player of the Year and First Team All-CACC.
 
Graduate forward Harry Scarborough (Wigan, England) joins Providence after graduating from St. John Rigby College (England). Scarborough is a former player of Chorley FC.
 
Graduate forward Pepe Lora (Madrid, Spain) joins the Friars for the 2024 campaign. Lora took full advantage of his Friar debut, scoring the two goals in the team's season opener against Quinnipiac. His efforts earned him a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (Aug.26).

Providence and Hofstra have met three times, with two encounters occurring in NCAA Tournament play. In 2005, the Friars claimed a 1-0 overtime victory against the Pride in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at Hofstra. The following year, the Friars fell 2-0 to the Pride in the 2006 NCAA Tournament First Round at Hofstra.
 
Hofstra enters the game with a 1-0-1 overall record. The team's one draw comes from a 0-0 tie against Fordham University on Aug.22. The Pride most recently defeated American University, 4-1, in a non-conference matchup on Aug.25.
 
Last season, the Pride finished with a 14-3-5 overall record including a 5-1-2 mark in CAA play, which earned the squad the No.14 seed in the NCAA Championship that advanced them to the Third Round. Following its successful campaign, Hofstra was selected No.17 in the 2024 United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NCAA Preseason Poll and picked to win the conference in the CAA Preseason Poll.
 
Hofstra returns 12 players from that team, including All-American defender Pierce Infuso who was named Preseason CAA Player of the Year. Also returning is fifth-year midfielder Roc Carles who is an Honorable Mention Preseason All-CAA selection.
 
Hofstra University's goalkeeper Filippo Dadone was selected the CAA Defensive Player of the Week (8/26/24) following his performance in the team's first two games of the season. Dadone made five saves to secure a shutout in his debut start for Hofstra during the season opener against Fordham.

UMass enters series play with an 0-0-2 record in non-conference play. The Minutemen tied Sienna College,0-0, in their season opener on Aug.22. On Aug.26, the team earned a 0-0 draw against the defending America East Champions, Bryant University.
 
The Minutemen posted a 7-6-6 overall record last season, with a 4-3-1 mark in A10 play. UMass advanced to the Atlantic 10 Semifinals, falling 3-1 to the top-seeded VCU. The team was predicted to finish sixth this season in the A10 Preseason Poll.
 
The UMass squad returns 16 players from last year's roster including two graduate students, Alec Hughes and Mike Willis.
 
 Last season, forward Hughes finished the 2023 campaign ranked third in goals (15) and 14th in points (31). He was tabbed to the College Soccer News All-America Third Team, A10 Offensive Player of the Year, and ECAV Offensive Player of the Year. Hughes earned a spot on the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region Second Team, was listed in the Top Drawer Soccer Midseason Top 100, and received an invitation to participate in the 2023 MLS College Showcase.
 
Midfield / forward Willis appeared and 17 with nine starts last season. He logged 910 minutes and recorded nine points on two goals and three assists.
 
UP NEXT…
The Friars will return home to host Rutgers University on Friday, Sep. 6 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on FloSports.
 
Rutgers holds a 10-1-1 all-time series edge over Providence. The last meeting between the two teams was in 2009 at Rutgers, where the Friars suffered a  2-1 double-overtime loss to the Scarlet Knights.
