Women’s Soccer Set to Host Holy Cross and Wisconsin

The Friars will host Holy Cross Thursday, Aug. 22 at 4:00 p.m. and Wisconsin Sunday, Aug. 25 at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played on Chapey Field

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team is set to host Holy Cross and the University of Wisconsin this week. The Friars will face Holy Cross on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 4:00 p.m. before facing Wisconsin on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 1:00 p.m.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS... The Friars enter the week with a 1-0-0 record. Providence opened their season last week with a 1-0 shut-out win over Rhode Island.   

  

Graduate student Kacy Lawrence (Monroe, Conn.) led the team with the game-winning goal over the Rams. Sophomore Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) and Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.) lead the team in assists, both recording one in the Friars' home opener.   

  

TWO MEMBERS OF THE FRIARS QUALIFY FOR THE 2024 FIFA UNDER-20 WORLD CUP… Junior Ella McBride (Peterborough, Canada) and Sophomore Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) have qualified for the Under-20 FIFA World Cup 2024 with Canada Soccer's Under-20 Women's National Team (Aug. 19). The team will begin their group-stage journey against France on Saturday, Aug. 31.   

  

KAYLA BRIGGS NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM... Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Ont.) received preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. The BIG EAST released its 2024 Preseason Coaches' Poll and preseason honors Tuesday (Aug. 13).  

  

BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES POLL... Providence women's soccer was picked to finish fifth in the 2024 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll earning 66 points. Providence finished last season with a 4-1-5 record in conference play.   

  

NEWCOMERS… Providence welcomes nine student-athletes to the program this season including two graduate transfers, two junior transfers, and six freshmen. The graduate transfers include Kacey Lawerence (Monroe, Conn.) and Ellie Thallman (Northville, Mich.). The Junior transfers include Brooke Haarala (Framingham, Mass.) and Olivia Allen (Holland Landing, Ontario).   

  

The incoming freshman class includes Kelly Stepnowski (Glastonbury, Conn.), Amaya Coffie (Warwick, R.I.), Stephanie Schoeley (Thedford, Ontario), Caitlyn Gratton (Hamilton, Ontario), Lily Gibbs (Dedham, Mass.) and Kirstin Middaugh (Lancaster, N.Y.).  

  

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST HOLY CROSS... The Friars hold a 17-4-3 all-time record against the Crusaders. In their last meeting, the Friars won 2-0 in Providence, R.I. in 2018.   

  

SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS... Holy Cross enters Thursday's contest with a 0-2-0 record with losses coming against Fairfield and New Hampshire. The Crusaders were picked last out of the 10 teams in the Patriot League Preseason Coaches Poll.   

  

In 2023, Holy Cross finished 5-7-5 overall and 2-4-3 in the Patriot League conference play. The Crusaders return their second-leading scorer from last season, Sydney Baldwin, who tallied six points on two goals and two assists. Nadia Cassamajor, Ava Grahm, and Charlotte Hanchar have all recorded two points on one goal each this season.   

  

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST WISCONSIN... The Friars come into Sunday's contest with a 0-1-0 all-time record against the Badgers. In their last meeting, the Friars fell to Wisconsin 3-2 (OT) in Madison, Wis. in 2021.   

  

SCOUTING THE BADGERS... Wisconsin enters Sunday's contest with a 0-1-0 record falling 1-0 to number three ranked BYU. The Badgers will face UConn on Thursday before Sunday's match against the Friars. Wisconsin was picked sixth in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches Poll and is currently receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches National Poll.   

  

In 2023, Wisconsin finished 14-5-4 overall and 7-2-1 in the Big Ten conference play. Returners Hailey Baumann, Maddie Ishaug, and Aryssa Mahrt were named Big Ten Players to Watch in the league's coaches poll. Baumann was named to the All-Big Ten Third Team and All-Big Ten Freshman Team the last season. Ishaug was named to the All-Big Ten Third Team in 2023.   

  

UP NEXT... The Friars will host Fairleigh Dickenson on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I.
