PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College men's soccer team is set to host its season opener against Quinnipiac on Thursday, Aug. 22. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The Friars will travel to Newton, Mass. to play the Boston College Eagles for a non-conference match up on Monday, Aug. 26. Kick-off is set for 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the ACCN Digital Network.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS
 
Providence concluded the 2023 campaign with an 8-6-3 overall record including a 4-2-2 mark in BIG EAST play. The team finished second in the BIG EAST East Division to qualify for its 22
nd BIG EAST Tournament. The No.3-seeded Friars defeated No. 6-seeded Creighton,   3-0, to advance to the BIG EAST Semifinals.
 
Last season, Providence posted a 1-1-1 record against national top-five ranked opponents. The Friars' only loss was to then-No. 1 Syracuse. They secured a draw against then-No. 3 Akron and achieved a shutout victory over then-No. 5 Georgetown.
 
Four returners claimed All-BIG EAST honors last season. Junior 
Diego Batista (Barcelos, Portugal) and graduate student 
Lukas Burns (Cinnaminson, N.J.) earned All-BIG EAST Second Team. Senior 
Cole Dewhurst (Lancaster, Mass.) was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team. Graduate Student 
Luis Garcia (Gran Canaria, Spain) earned Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
 
RETURNERS 
 
The Friars return 24 players from last year's roster including four multi-goal scorers.
 
Goalkeeper 
Lukas Burns returns for his fifth and final season with the Friars. Since becoming Providence's starting goalkeeper in 2021, Burns has played in over 50 career games, boasting a 1.17 goals against average and a .708 save percentage. He has recorded 16 shutouts and holds a career record of 20-12-12. Last season, Burns finished with a career-high seven shutouts, tying him for second in the BIG EAST. He was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, and the College Soccer News Men's National Team of the Week. Over the years, Burns has earned numerous accolades, including a BIG EAST All-Tournament Selection in 2021, three BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors, and two mentions on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
 
Sophomore midfielder, 
Pearse O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn.) enters his second year at Providence. In his freshman season, O'Brien led the team with seven assists. He also scored three goals and was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week (9/5/23) after netting his first career goal against Hofstra and assisting on the game-winning goal against URI.
 
Midfielder 
Luis Garcia enters his fifth season for Providence. Last season, Garcia started in two games for the Friars before suffering a season-ending injury. Throughout his career, Garcia has played in 45 matches for the Friars, tallying seven goals and nine assists. He is a two-time Preseason All-BIG EAST selection and has earned spots on the All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2021 and the All-BIG EAST Third Team in 2020-21. In 2022, Garcia gained national attention, being named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men's Players to Watch List for midfielders and the Hermann Trophy Watch List. He was also selected for the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region First Team in 2021.
 
Defender 
Cole Dewhurst will close out his collegiate career this season for the Friars. Dewhurst started all 17 games for Providence last season, scoring a career-high two goals and earning a spot on the  All-BIG EAST Third Team.
 
Midfielder 
Diego Batista will begin his second season for Providence. Batista joined the Friars last year for the 2023 campaign as a transfer student from Monroe College. Batista concluded the 2023 campaign with one goal and five assists which earned him an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection. At Monroe College, Batista led the Mustangs to a Regional Championship title and a NJCAA DI National Championship title. He was named NJCAA DI Player of the year.
 
Junior 
Bruno Rosa (Cascais, Portugal) returns for a second season for the Friars. Rosa joined the team last year as a transfer student from Monroe College with teammate Batista. In his first season with Providence, Rosa played in all 17 games with five appearances in the starting lineup. He tallied four goals and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (10/23/23) following a two-goal performance against Butler. At Monroe, Rosa finished top six in assists for NJCAA Division I.
 
Graduate student midfielder 
Rodrigo Vaza (Torres Vedras, Portugal) returns for his second season with Providence. He joined the Friars as a transfer student from Franklin Pierce University. Vaza concluded the 2023 campaign with 14 starts, two goals and one assist. At Franklin Pierce, he helped lead the Ravens to two Northeast-10 Conference Tournament titles and an NCAA Division II national title in 2022. Vaza was named to the Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference Team.
 
Graduate student defender 
Bernardo Prego (Evora, Portugal) comes back for his second season with the Friars. Prego joined the Friars last year as a transfer student from Franklin Pierce along with fellow teammate Vaza. He played in eight games for Providence before suffering a season-ending injury. While with the Ravens, Prego was named to the Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference (2022) and to the Division II All-East Region Second Team (2022). He was a recipient of the Northeast-10 Elite-24 Award.
 
NEWCOMERS
The Friars welcome eight freshmen and five transfers to the 2024 roster.

Graduate Midfielder Kevin Castañeda (Providence, R.I.)  joins the Friars after four seasons with the University of Rhode Island where he was captain of the 2023 squad. Castañeda played in 54 games with 47 appearances in the starting lineup. He tallied six goals and seven assists with the Rams.
 
Graduate forward 
Aidan Davock (Medway, Mass.) joins Providence after four seasons at Colgate University. Davock started 40 of his 45 appearances at Colgate where he recorded 14 goals including seven game-winners. Davock netted two goals in the First Round of the Patriot League Tournament to deliver the Raiders to their first playoff win since 2018.  He was named to the All-Patriot League First Team (2023), Patriot League All-Tournament Team (2023), All-Patriot League Second Team (2022) and to the All-Patriot Third Team (2020-21).  Davock's older brother, Trevor was a graduate transfer for the Friars' 2019 squad where he recorded four game-winning goals including the golden goal at Penn State in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
Graduate midfielder 
Israel Neto (Salvador, Brazil) joins the Friars after four seasons at Caldwell University. Neto registered 38 starts with 41 total appearances. He recorded 25 goals and 18 assists over his career with the Cougars. Neto finished the 2023 season second in the CACC with 13 goals and 32 points that earned him CACC Player of the Year and First Team All-CACC.
 
Graduate forward 
Harry Scarborough (Wigan, England) joins Providence after graduating from St. John Rigby College (England). Scarborough is a former player of Chorley FC.
 
Graduate forward 
Pepe Lora (Madrid, Spain) joins the Friars for the 2024 campaign. Lora played at Unión Adarve, Alcobendas, Periso CF and C.D. Canillas. He helped lead Unión Adarve to ascension in the 2020-21 season with 16 goals and six assists over 16 games.
 
 
PRESEASON AWARDS             
 
It was announced Aug. 9 that Batista was named to the 2024 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men's Players to Watch list. Batista was the first Friar to receive this recognition since Garcia in 2022.
 
On Aug. 19, the BIG EAST Announced that Burns was named Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. Batista and Burns both were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and the Friars were picked to finish second in the BIG EAST East Division.

The Bobcats finished last season with a 3-9-5 overall record including a 1-5-4 mark in MACC play. On Aug. 14 the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced that Quinnipiac was picked to finish sixth in the conference.
 
Quinnipiac is returning their third leading scorer Francisco Ferreira as well as junior goalkeeper Karl Netzell.

The Eagles concluded the 2023 season with a 3-9-5 overall record including a 0-5-3 record in ACC play. They were picked to finish 15
th in the ACC.
 
Boston College added junior midfielder Ask Ekeland to the 2024 roster. Ekeland was ranked 24
th in the 2024 Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Top100 National Rankings and the 2024 Top Drawer Soccer's Preseason All-America Second Team. He joins the Eagles after spending the previous two seasons at Duquense in the Atlantic 10. He was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 in both years he spent at the Dukes. In his sophomore year, Ekeland was named the Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year as well as to the United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-Southeast Region after notching 12 goals and three assists.
