Friars Surged Early But Suffered 66-62 Loss To #RV/RV Marquette

Emily Archibald paced the Friars with a season-high 18 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by #RV/RV Marquette, 66-62, on Saturday, Feb. 3 in front of a near capacity crowd (1,344) at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars started the game strong and held the lead for just over 34 minutes of action, but Marquette was able to steal the win with a 23-12 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter. Providence dropped to 11-12 overall and evened its record in BIG EAST play (5-5). The Golden Eagles improved to 17-5 overall (6-5 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence got out to a 9-0 lead forcing a Marquette timeout with 5:55 on the clock. 
• Marquette started the game 0-9 from the field before hitting its first bucket at the 4:11 mark.
• Providence extended its lead to 20-2, forcing yet another Marquette timeout with 2:20 on the clock.
• The Friars carried a 23-9 lead into the intermission, led by Emily Archibald's team-high 11 points on 4-4 shooting from the field, including a 3-3 performance from beyond the arc. 
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Marquette started the second with a 5-0 spurt before Archibald knocked down her fourth three of the game (26-13).
• At the media timeout, Providence held a 30-18 advantage (4:38).
• Marquette closed within seven (34-27) with 1:22 on the clock.
• Providence went into halftime with a 36-27 lead.
• Archibald scored 16 first-half points on 6-6 shooting overall, including 4-4 from three.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Marquette closed within two (43-41) with a 14-7 scoring advantage to start the quarter.
• Providence responded with a 7-0 run during a span of 1:16 to go back up by nine with 1:30 to play in the frame (50-41).
• The Friars took a 50-43 lead into the fourth quarter.
Brynn Farrell paced the Friars with six points in the third on a 2-2 showing from three-point territory.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Marquette closed within one with 6:20 to play as the Friars went scoreless from the field for 2:36.
Olivia Olsen ended the drought with a pair of free throws, but at the midway point of the quarter the Golden Eagles were back within one (56-55) heading into the media (4:51).
• McKenzie Hare hit a three out of the break to give Marquette its first lead of the day (58-56) with 4:37 to play.
• The Friars were forced to call timeout as the Golden Eagles went on a 9-0 run to claim a 62-56 edge with 3:16 left.
• Olsen and Marta Morales Romero scored back-to-back buckets to get the Friars back on the scoreboard (62-60) at the 2:19 mark.
• Trailing 64-60, Providence called timeout with 46-seconds left to advance the ball. Farrell drew a foul on the Friars' possession and converted both free throws to get within 64-62 with 39-seconds to play.
• Providence got a stop on the defensive end and called its final timeout of the game with 6.7-seconds left. The Friars were unable to advance the ball with the timeout and turned it over with 1-second remaining bring the ball up the court.
• Marquette sealed the game at the line (66-62).
• The Golden Eagles took advantage of six Friars miscues in the fourth, which yielded an 11-0 margin in points off turnovers.
 
NOTES:
• Archibald completed the day with a season-high 18 points on 6-6 shooting, including a 4-4 showing from the arc. She also added a team-high eight rebounds and recorded one assist and one steal.
• Olsen also scored 18 points on 8-12 shooting from the field and added six boards, three blocks and one assist.
• Farrell rounded out the list of double-digit scorers with 11 points and added four assists.
• Freshman Kendall Eddy registered career highs in assists (five) and steals (four).
• Providence was out-rebounded by its opponent for the first time during BIG EAST Conference play as Marquette posted a 33-32 edge on the glass. 
• The Friars' enjoyed a season-high crowd of 1,344 at Alumni Hall.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 7 against DePaul. The game will be played at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. and is scheduled to tip-off at 8:00 p.m. (ET).
